Young (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) arrived at Boise State in the summer of 2007. Immediately, veterans began describing his speed and lateral quickness as “special.”

Three senior wide receivers carried the load in 2006. The Broncos needed some help in 2007 — and Young filled the need for a deep threat as a true freshman.

He averaged a team-high 14.5 yards per catch and scored seven touchdowns, but there were early signs that he was butting heads with coaches. He was suspended for the first quarter of the 2007 Hawaii Bowl and his season-long fumbling problems led to two turnovers in that game.

His big plays and bubbly personality made him a media favorite — and the attention got to the 17-year-old.

“It all hit me really fast,” he said. “It was definitely something that I wasn’t really ready for.”

His ego became an issue.

He brushed off some coaching points — which was most evident with his fumbles.

He says he was stubborn and spoiled, as the youngest of five children and the only boy. He only saw his point of view.

And as the problems mounted, he internalized them.
