Brandin Cooks aims to 'bring that explosive play' to Cowboys offense

Listen to anyone involved with the Cowboys offense talk about their goals for 2023, and it won’t take long for the word explosive to pop up.

While Dallas finished 2022 a top-five team in points per game, they saw just 81 explosive pass plays (16+ yards) over the course of the season. That was actually under the league average, and a stat they aim to raise this fall.

Enter Brandin Cooks. The veteran receiver who’s already notched 1,000-yard campaigns with four different clubs, believes that’s a big reason why the Cowboys traded for him in March.

2. Dak Prescott and Brandin Cooks (Dallas Cowboys)

Cooks isn't going to be the No. 1 wide receiver for the Cowboys, but there's a case to be made he can be one of the best No. 2 wideouts in all of football. Cooks has six 1,000-yard seasons in his career, four of which have come with different teams. He'll be facing No. 2 cornerbacks in 2023, so the production and efficiency should go up.

Prescott is the best quarterback Cooks has played with since Jared Goff -- and CeeDee Lamb won't be getting 30% of the Cowboys' receptions like last season (which was the highest rate in the NFL). Win-win for Dallas.

Who wrote this? CeeDee should still get 30% of the receptions imho. CeeDee doesn't draw CB1 because he plays the slot so often, so Cooks could be going against CB1 quite a bit.

I see Gallup as the WR will get 1on1 coverage and has the opportunity to eat heavily. Cooks is going to get his no doubt, but I like the high usage for Lamb.

The advantage for Cooks is that he should receive a lot more single coverage than Lamb. Cooks should force them to roll coverage his way at times, especially if he can win some of those one-on-one matches deep, but Lamb is still going to be the No. 1 target of defenses. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out. We were expecting to see this kind of corps when we had Cooper, Lamb and Gallup as our top three, but it never really materialized, mainly because of injuries. Hoping we get to hit defenses with this all year long this time.

This guy will be one of the biggest disappointments ever and the search to replace Amari will continue.
