Bruce Campbell in the 2nd round?

If Burnett, Ducasse, Alualu, or Lee is also there I'd be sick. I think I'd even prefer Veldheer...

I'd be upset. Drafting a highly questionable player like Campbell isn't a good idea.
But it just feels like a Jerry type move.

Well, he has Top 3 pick talent, but was a mediocre at best college player.

If you don't want to attribute that to stupidity, you got to attribute it to something.

correction. he doesn't have top 3 talent. he has top 3 athletic ability. football talent he lacks.

I think I would much prefer Sean Lee. But Sean Lee won't be available at our pick in the 2nd.

I am not dissing you, I am just laughing at the scouts critiquing players like they are reviewing and entrance essay at MIT.

There have been countless great NFL players that were flat out stupid even those who could not even read.

There are different types of mental intelligence, and yes .. "conceptual" is one of the types. Left brain vs. right brain, etc. You can be bad at math and logic but good at arts and imagination.

Campbell's wonderlic wasn't particularly bad at 18. Whatever type of intelligence that involves taking instructions from coaches, digesting it, picture it in his brain, and emmulate it football field Campbell seems to severely lack. That's what the scouts were talking about... that when you talk basic football concepts with him he gets a glazed over look in his eyes. Maryland has produced a lot of NFL players and first day picks over the past several years, so I'm having a hard time believing the entire program and coaching staff is the issue.

I'm fine with him that low - just feed him a lot of fish and hope he get smart quickly-like with good fury.

Him getting passed Oakland in the 1s. Is unlikely in the second impossible

I think you're right.

Al could easily get Clausen and then follow up with Campbell.

That's a good draft for him. :)

This is one of those guys I'd just rather not be associated with. If he were mentally weak but a terrific college player, I don't think I'd be as concerned. But we're asking an awful college player who just happens to be built like a statue -- with the statue's mental capacity to boot? I don't see it. You're begging for disaster.

The draft is all about risk-reward. At times, I'm more than willing to take the chance. Here? I'd be more than fine to take the risk that he goes on to become someone else's great offensive lineman than taking on the burden to develop him ourselves.

With all of that said, if we're dead set on taking him, the second round would be much preferred to the first round. If we get a solid, can't-miss guy in Round 1, it'd be easier to stomach perhaps the biggest boom-bust guy in the draft in Round 2. But as our top pick? Too risky for my taste.

Say if we don't get a Olineman in the 1st and Campbell is there in the 2nd and Dallas takes him...

Would you be ok with that or upset at the pick?

For me i'd be ok with it because of the faith I have in our coaching staff when it comes to developing talented players.'

I think there are some teams that could get the most out of him and we are one of those teams.

I'd still rather give up a 2nd for Jared Gaither but if money is that much of an issue than why not try and develop this guy?

OK don't bite my head off but I would be ok if we took him in the first. Call it a gut feeling. one year of working with him and move Free back to the right guard in a year. I really like the way Free played right guard but wasn't too sure about him on the left side. I know he had little to no proctice there so I will cut him some slack there. Just my take. Campbell is raw but living in the DC metro area I also know he played with turf toe last year which hindered him some.

Conceptualize, lol.

It is football not launching an orbiter. You don't have to be a Norman Einstein to have a successful career playing football. For every cerebral hall of fame player there is an equal dumb player. I would question his performance however if the rest of the oline and offense was garbage chances are he would look pretty bad too, see Big in Arizona.

I am not for taking him no later then the 3rd but some of the criticisms are borderline ridiculous.
No one would be punching holes in Campbell's game if he graded out better on tape. Then you could state it looks like a case of overanalysis. That is what is happening now with Okung. He should be hands down everyone's tackle choice, yet there are teams thinking Williams is a better pick for strange reasons.

These "conceptual" questions undoubtedly came as a result after teams worked him out and asked pointed questions. It is part of doing your homework. If he is sharp as a bowling ball, then you probably do not want that player protecting your quarterback. You do not have to be a genius, but you have to be able to grasp the mental part of playing the offensive line. And that includes reacting quickly. If he has slow reactions in protection, that should concern people. A lot of what I read from scouts is that they want linemen who score higher on the intelligence scale. By and large, they want players who can outwit, understand angles and leverage and can outreact the DL, who are some of the Norman Einsteins you refer to. Outside of the QB, OL are generally the smarter players on your team.

Seems like Torrin Tucker part deux, minus the jiggly boobies.

As long as you have another contingency plan in place in case someone needs to fill in at LT next year, because Campbell should never, ever, ever, ever, ever see the field within his first two years. Unless you're just dying to lose Romo for the season.

I should re-post the article where the scouts and personnel people talk about how frighteningly slow he is mentally.

Save this remark two years from now. I could be wrong though. By the way please repost that article.

Conceptualize is an important word for offensive linemen.

You have to process so much information so quickly on the Oline - and you have to do it with an aim to the play direction. i.e. if a run is going here, what should I be doing with my body - what about if a LB steps into that gap - who is most dangerous - etc etc etc....you've got to do all of that in the few seconds before the snap, there's just so much going on. I'm sure anyone who has played has seen guys that were just ridiculous physical specimens be completely neutralized by their own stupidity. Their mind gets tied up in a pretzel and they can barely walk.
