You want something different for your Cowboys mock draft?

It wasn’t that long ago that at every turn the Dallas Cowboys found themselves connected to the Oklahoma Sooners. For almost two years now people have done what they can to will Lincoln Riley into existence as the team’s next head coach whenever that vacancy ultimately came. Interestingly enough, the Cowboys were, in fact, looking for a head coach after last season ended, but before things ever got serious with anyone else they hired Mike McCarthy. That put an end to all of that.

What if Riley wasn’t the once-upon-a-time Sooner to end up wearing the silver and blue, though? With the program that Riley has built in Norman, there are a lot of players that could eventually find themselves playing for the Cowboys, recent Sooners include Charles Tapper in 2016, James Hanna in 2012, & DeMarco Murray in 2011.

One NFL analyst believes that Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb could be the Cowboys pick in the first round

There are mock drafts upon mock drafts that have the Dallas Cowboys adding safety help in 2020. LSU’s Grant Delpit and Alabama’s Xavier McKinney are the hot names out there, so mockers can only get so creative.

It’s not too often that an analyst has projected the Cowboys to go offense with their first-rounder this year. In fact, the Cowboys haven’t taken an offensive player in the first round since they drafted Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. Technically speaking the Cowboys did “spend” their 20109 first-round pick on Amari Cooper, and NFL Media’s Bucky Brooks thinks they could take a different receiver with this year’s first.

17: CeeDee Lamb - WR

School: Oklahoma | Year: Junior

The Cowboys could let Amari Cooper walk as a free agent and replace him with a rugged WR1 boasting dynamic playmaking skills. (Or Dallas could re-up Cooper and add another explosive piece to the offensive puzzle.)

CeeDee Lamb topped 1,100 yards and caught at least 11 touchdowns in both his sophomore and junior seasons at Oklahoma so he is by far one of the more coveted receivers in the class. There are many an analyst that have him as their number one receiver in the group.

It would be interesting to see the Cowboys draft Lamb with the 17th pick, assuming he even made it that far to begin with, especially if they did also retain Amari Cooper. This would probably be a Randall Cobb-less world and would give Dallas a trio of Cooper, Lamb, and Michael Gallup for at the very least 2020. There’s a lot to like about that.

Some Cowboys fans have suggested either letting Amari Cooper walk in free agency or placing the transition tag on him, drafting someone like Lamb (or another top wideout), and moving on from the former in 2021. There is some logic to that.

That is an admittedly risky approach and would also come at the cost of getting defensive help with the 17th overall pick. The Cowboys could score 40 points a game but if they can’t stop anyone, what’s the point of it all?
