Is Will McClay staying or going? What about the assistant coaches?
Report: Will McClay staying with Cowboys, declines Texans’ request - Charean Williams, PFT
John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday afternoon that McClay will remain with the Cowboys.
Will McClay, the Cowboys' VP of player personnel, informed the Texans he's staying with Jerry Jones. He was on their list of possible GM candidates to replace Rick Smith.

Will McClay declined the Texans’ request for an interview, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. McClay will remain with the Cowboys as their VP of player personnel.
The Texans are seeking a General Manager to replace Rick Smith, who is taking a year-long leave of absence.
Despite report, Cowboys’ Will McClay has not spoken with Texans about GM position - Jon Machota, SportsDay
After the reports broke this weekend that Vice President of Player Personnel Will McClay met with the Texans about their GM position, McClay denied those reports.
”I haven’t officially accepted or declined interview with Houston because I haven’t talked to anyone from there,” McClay said in a statement. “My intentions to interview or stay in Dallas won’t be divulged until I speak with someone officially from Houston if they are interested out of respect for both organizations and the process.”
The will-he-or-won’t-he Will McClay saga may not be over for Dallas - RJ Ochoa, Blogging The Boys
RJ writes on the McClay situation.
But if McClay has no interest in interviewing, why would it get to the point that he would be given permission? That would suggest that he has at the very least the minimum level of interest, no?
As noted, McClay has been linked to these types of openings before. While he’s turned them down previously, who’s to say how long they’ll be there for him? It’s understandable that he would be interested to some degree.
Whether the likelihood of him leaving is large or small, it is at the very least something that is somewhat relevant for the moment. Until Will McClay doesn’t leave, the possibility exists that he could. And now so does the permission to, apparently.
Turnover On Jason Garrett’s Coaching Staff Begins; Kellen Moore’s Future? - Rob Phillips, The Mothership
Rob Phillips writes on the turnover of the assistant coaches on staff that is occurring.
Since the season ended on New Year’s Eve, wide receivers coach Derek Dooley accepted the offensive coordinator job at the University of Missouri and Garrett said tight ends coach Steve Loney plans to retire.
There is speculation about more potential movement on Garrett’s staff, though the Cowboys have not announced or confirmed reports of additional turnover.
Among those rumored potential changes: Longtime quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson and secondary Joe Baker have expiring contracts and are not expected to return, according to multiple reports; assistant head coach/special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia reportedly could be let out of his contract to pursue other coaching opportunities; and running backs coach Gary Brown, linebackers coach/passing game coordinator Matt Eberflus and safeties coach Greg Jackson reportedly have expiring deals but could be back.
If Wilson does part ways with the organization, could Kellen Moore be an option as quarterbacks coach?

The 2018 Dallas Cowboys are totally, completely, unequivocally all-in on Scott Linehan - RJ Ochoa, BTB
There was some thought last week that the Cowboys could move on from Scott Linehan as their offensive coordinator after a disappointing season from the offensive side of the ball, but RJ points that it appears that the opposite seems to be happening.
If Scott Linehan isn’t good enough, the way Romo and Zeke weren’t available, offensively the Cowboys won’t be able to run, no pun intended. The Cowboys offense is a one-man band and they keep changing the lead singer. Get a group of singers.
Dallas is centering everything around the one cog that designed the systems that previously failed for similar reasons. They’re either going to look like geniuses for believing in Linehan or fools that kicked the can down the road, prolonging what many felt was inevitable in early 2018.
Which will it be?
Ex-NFL Scout: Time to move forward for Cowboys coaching staff - SportsDay
Bryan Broaddus joined 103.5 The Fan and discussed numerous different topics, including Jason Garrett and his coaching staff.
Bryan Broaddus: Every time I try to fire him, he wins 13 games or he wins 12 games. You guys are two or three years behind me on this whole get Jason Garrett fired thing. I saw what’s happening here, and he’s clearly on the hot seat. Some of the things everybody’s talking about on your station and talking about in the media that should’ve been discussed two or three years ago, and then he finds a way to win those games and basically shuts me up. I’m going to let things take its course, and I’m going to see what happens this season, but he clearly has run out of options.
It’s now time to move forward, and he’s going to have basically a new coaching staff, and we’ll see if the new coaching staff is really new, or is it guys that are currently on the staff? I’m going to give him this year and either he’s going to sink or he’s going to swim as they say.
Dane Brugler’s draft mailbag: The Cowboys’ biggest need, some WRs Dallas could target - Dane Brugler, SportsDay
Dane Brugler is one of the best in the business. His draft mailbag is always a must read for Cowboys fans.
What do you think is the Cowboys’ biggest draft need?
I think what happens in free agency will help bring clarity to this question. There are needs at every level of the defense and at left guard, but right now, I would lean wide receiver. Regardless if Dez Bryant is or isn’t a true No. 1 wide receiver anymore, it doesn’t matter -- he isn’t going anywhere and he will be this team’s “X” wide receiver in 2018. But he needs more help from the “Z” receiver and if the Cowboys can upgrade from Terrance Williams, they need to do so. And Alabama’s Calvin Ridley would be an ideal candidate because of his play speed and route-running, allowing him to create separation. That type of addition to the offense would have a ripple effect, helping give Dak an easier target and take pressure off Dez on the other side.
What national writers say are the Cowboys’ biggest NFL draft needs - SportsDay
Brugler gave his opinion, but the SportsDay gathers some more thoughts on what the Cowboys’ biggest needs are come draft time. Check it out to see what writers from CBS Sports, NFL.com, and Bleacher Report have to say.
Matt Miller, Bleacher Report
Biggest need: Wide receiver
Analysis: “The end is coming for Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. They might still be major names in the NFL, and they might be Dallas Cowboys legends, but you could make the argument they’re both starting to hold the offense back because of a lack of explosive ability. Jerry Jones and Co. need to look at the wide receiver corps and attack it like they did the offensive line a few years back--commit to a quick overhaul.”
