Despite Jerry Jones indicating that the Cowboys were likely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, Kellen Moore will not be one of them.
The #Cowboys are releasing QB Kellen Moore, sources say. Could be back at some point, though.

This news comes as a breath of fresh air for many fans as Moore hasn’t done very much to make people feel good about his place on the roster. The sixth year veteran played in three games for Dallas in 2015 where he was 61/104 for 779 yards, with four touchdowns and six interceptions. Last season, he suffered a fractured fibula on his right leg during a training camp which opened the door for rookie quarterback, Dak Prescott to see action.
This preseason, it’s another rookie quarterback that has pushed Moore aside on the depth chart. Cooper Rush has shined so far completing 75% of his passes and throwing six touchdowns without a single pick.
With roster space limited, the Cowboys just don’t have room for Moore. The team may try to bring him back on the practice squad (Bryan Broaddus said Moore is eligible), which could be the best of both worlds for the Cowboys. He’s still around to help mentor Rush, but not take up an actual roster spot.
Alternatively, the Cowboys could bring him back on the 53-man roster, as Todd Archer of ESPN explains:
The Cowboys will release quarterback Kellen Moore but he could rejoin the team as early as Sunday. The Cowboys are considering placing tight end Rico Gathers (concussion) on injured reserve but needed Gathers to be on the 53-man roster Saturday. Moore will not be subject to waivers.
