News: BTB: Quick thoughts on six players cut by Cowboys during final roster cuts

Initial thoughts on some of the players that didn’t make the cut.

Noah Brown made the team and Kellen Moore didn’t.


It was no secret that the team faced some tough decisions to trim the roster down to 53 players. We all knew that it meant saying goodbye to some of our favorite up-and-coming guys, but for other players - we aren’t going to miss them. Here are my thoughts on some of the players the Cowboys released today.

Hard to say goodbye


Lewis Neal

The undrafted free agent from LSU had a good preseason showing. He was one of only four defensive linemen to record a sack this preseason (Taco Charlton 2, Damontre Moore 2, and Lenny Jones 1). He outplayed the defensive tackles that the Cowboys drafted this year (Joey Ivie and Jordan Carrell). With a strong showing and the team being lean at DT, Neal looked like he had a reasonable shot to make the team. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Now the team holds their breath that he makes it through waivers.

For a team that is just a few years removed from having some shaky players on the interior defensive line, it’s sad to let someone like Neal go. Fortunately, the team has some defensive end options that can also move inside so this move speaks to just how deep the DL is this season.

Marquez White

When the news broke that the Cowboys traded for cornerback, Bene Benwikere the writing was on the wall for White. The team could be dealing with some injury issues that might be more worrisome that originally thought and the need for a healthy corner could trump the future potential of White.

Kellen Moore

Anything to bury any memory of the 2015 quarterback squad is a step in the right direction. Moore didn’t play well this preseason and Cooper Rush played exceptional. It’s been mind boggling that the coaching staff would feel compelled to keep Moore around, but for now - it’s moot.

The belief is that he’ll still get resigned and that again will bring out confusion from Cowboys Nation.

Emmett Cleary

While the fifth year offensive line hasn’t played particularly well this preseason, many still had him penciled into the mix due to a lack of depth at the position. With La’el Collins confidently holding down the right tackle spot, the team felt that Jonathan Cooper, Chaz Green, Joe Looney, and Byron Bell are good enough to round out the rest of the depth along the offensive line.

Andy Jones/Lance Lenoir

The the last couple training camps Andy Jones’ name has surfaced as a possible candidate to sneak onto the roster. He’ll impress in practice, but then disappear in games. The emergence of Noah Brown made things even more challenging for any depth WR to work their way onto the team. Both Jones and Lenoir had no chance to make the squad, but now the question begs - which one will the Cowboys target for their practice squad?
