BTB: Stats against Eagles show how close the Cowboys were and are

A game of inches, indeed. The Dallas Cowboys’ 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was a classic case. The fourth-down pass to Luke Schoonmaker failed to give the Cowboys seven points because the ball was just about a foot away from the end zone when his knee went down. Micah Parsons got his hand on a fumble that could have also put Dallas ahead, but was unable to secure it before the Eagles clawed it back. Repeatedly the infamous Tush Push/Brotherly Shove would get a yard or three to move the sticks for Philadelphia. Then there was Dak Prescott stepping out just before the two-point conversion was successful.

But the overall stats also show some big numbers, particularly for the Cowboys’ passing game. When all the near-misses are combined with some luck, and at times erratic officiating, it paints a picture of a Dallas team that is able to go toe-to-toe with the best in the conference. While the humiliation at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers sowed doubts about that, Sunday showed us that with just a touch more luck, Dallas would be among the real contenders in the league.

Actually, they still are. With a 5-3 record at the midpoint of the season, they are on track for double-digit wins and sit in the sixth seed at the moment. While the odds are that they would have to enter the playoffs as a wild card, there is a quite recent history of a team based in Arlington that did that and made it all the way to the promised land. Sometimes, you just have to go and take it, after all.

And I agree. If you think Prescott can't get it done, or isn't talented enough, you're probably a football moron.

Football sometimes comes down to intangibles. Like coaching discipline. This team has alot of talent but lacks proper coaching and discipline. It points to Jerry. Hd allows for a cupcake coach. The culture is broken. It wont get fixed until Jerry is gone

I don't believe it's the players or Jerry. I think the discipline aspect falls on McCarthy. It's been this way since he arrived. He needs to fix it

That said, there's always going to be some aspects of it that are out of his control and I credit him for having the team ready to compete. This game could have gone either way. And when you're playing the best team in the league, that's kind of all you can ask for. I hate the Eagles. But I recognize they're a good team.

..just wait for round #2 at AT&T. We gonna get it back.
I think you're probably right. Won't be long and we re-match at our place.

This team can be good. But they are snake bitten by the same mistakes year in and year out.

- Costly penalties. Holding on Schoonmaker when it’s 21-17 and we are driving. False start on Tyler Smith on their 6 yards line to start.

- Not great coaching. Team remains very predictable in the run game. Start the game running up the middle twice. Playing behind the sticks and either not aggressive at all or way too aggressive. Coach your team to win, not to coach your team not to lose.

-Mental and clutch. To put it frank, this team is stupid. I don’t mean that with disrespect but they just don’t know how to adapt and overcome these tight situations. Schoonmaker running his route short/Ferguson not setting a pick. Dak stepping out and costing the team two points. The constant defensive false starts etc. Gallup dropping a wide open 3rd down he easily converts. This is the difference between 8-1 and 5-3.

When Dallas began driving the in the final seconds, you just were waiting for the other shoe to drop. When we got to the 6 and had 4 downs to win this, I thought maybe they will do it. False start, sack. I like the throw to Tolbert to catch them napping. I like the throw short to CeeDee … but why is a running back or receiver not trailing there for the pitch?

I agree with your analysis. I think they're saving the more creative run plays for the playoffs. I personally don't think McCarthy is concerned with seeds. He's trying to control what he can control. That said, they need to spend a day on how to be more disciplined and work on aspects of it each day.

About Dak stepping out. Not much he could do.. It was going to be close. Any hesitation and he doesn't get there anyway.. I'm going to give him a pass on that one.

You make good points though. Let's hope they learn from it.

So you believe Dak can win 3 games in a row in the playoffs (he's never won 2 in a row) and get the Cowboys into the super bowl?
Yes.

For me, it's more about I believe our 53 or 45 or whatever can get it done. But that includes Dak. I see it as a team game. But McCarthy needs to stop being cute. If points are on the board, and it's close, take the points.

Almost.

Yes...I'm the "almost" guy. And, yes, the reference goes back to "Apocalypto" times.

Everybody else, who watched the game, know else.

Let the Eagles have just a medicore defense and your stats go down the toilett. This wouldnt have been a humilation it would have been an annahilation.

the little things that count. it seemed in this game all the little things went against the cowboys (some self inflicted) and all the little things went for Philly. including a few very questionable penalty calls.

I hope youre right. As a Cowboy fan, its been a minute since we won anyhting of note and I would love for that to change.

But.... I am tired of hearing, he is talented enough, he is this or he is that, he can get it done, Just get it done already! After 8 years I doubt he is any more capable of leading a team to a Superbowl than I am. He has never came up big when it matters the most, I hope that changes but reality is, very doubtful he will change who he is at this point. He is the guy that is good enough to not suck but bad enough to not win.
