By now, we’re all well-adjusted to life with Tony Romo as a CBS announcer. It’s a joy having him stay in our lives every Sunday.
As he’s no longer on the football field Romo has time for other pleasantries outside of the broadcast booth. He’s maintained his affinity for the game of golf in retirement (although he rarely uses that word) and his affinity for winning apparently isn’t too far behind.
July 8th saw the return of the king when Romo got a win on a Sunday. He won the Racine Tri-Course Amateur Championship... by a poetically beautiful 9 shots. Hold me, please.
It didn’t hurt that the final round was played on one of Romo’s home courses, Meadowbrook Country Club, where he shot two under to pull away from the field. And to be fair to Romo, I don’t care who else was in the field. A nine-shot win is impressive. And this was actually the second time Romo, who went to high school in nearby Burlington, Wisc., has won this Racine event, having also taken the title in 2004.
In years past Romo has tried (and unfortunately failed) to qualify for the U.S. Open. The national championship of professional golf has already come and gone this year, but perhaps Romo’s game will be at a point next season where he can do it.
Coincidentally, the 2019 U.S. Open is going to be held at Pebble Beach. The world-renowned course in California is more than a golfer’s paradise, it’s the home to Romo’s boothmate Jim Nantz... who has a sweet backyard there.
