Buying tires

I'm going to have to replace the tires for my Jeep in the coming months and was curious about any suggestions some of you might have.

Last time I bought tires, I spent around $800. Looking online at the same store (treadqaurters) for comparable tires, and it looks like I'd be spending around $650 if I purchased them today. I've heard the price of tires can fluxuate like the price of gas.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that is used only on the roads. Something off road isn't neccessary. But I would like good traction in the snow and rain. Tread life is also a plus as I drive about 2k miles a month.

What stores/brands/etc should I avoid. And what should I look for?

Thanks in advance.

Tires are a petroleum based product , so yes they can fluctuate with costs to make it, same as fuel in airlines or transporting retail.

If you live somewhere south and don't drive like a mad man you can get summer tires and be cautious in the rain. I have summer tires and just lay off in slick conditions, no problem in my 350Z.

Up north get winter tires, or at least all-season, but those are not great in true winter conditions.

Best tire maker-Michelin,

After that you can look at the major ones Bridgestone, BF Goodrich, etc.

Check out Hankook tires...

They are reasonably priced and are excellent tires. They are newer to the market but are gathering a large following among drivers of SUV's.

I put a set on my Land Rover after several members of an LR Board I frequent suggested them. Most of those guys have/are moving over to Hankook.

$200 per tire cheaper than the Goodyear's I replaced them with...

NTB has real good prices on major brands (if there is one in your area). Good Year Trackers used to be a good all around tire that gets good traction in the snow and don't wear out fast. Not sure if they still make them but they should have something similar.

Very good advice there... I also drive a Jeep, and before I got new tires this year I went to their website and did a comparison of a number of different brands... their top-rated tire (according to customer surveys) were the Firestone Destination AT...

I then went over to my local tire dealer, where I've bought all my tires for the last 25 years, and picked up a set for just under 500.00 installed... I like the tread design on them...

Before getting these tires, I'd always gotten Goodyear Wranglers, and got very good tread life from them... I could recommend them too...

I just put some Nitto Trail Grapplers on my Tundra. They are bad-*** tires. If you're looking for a more street friendly tire, take a look at the Nitto Terra Grapplers. Great tires and an aggressive look. May be more than you want to spend, just depends on the size tire you're looking for.

Are Sam's Club that much cheaper?

I've always been a Discount Tire stan, but with two cars now, I'm looking at cheaper ways to maintain both cars.

It's been a long time since we had to buy tires, so you'd really have to price them out to see. I thought it was a good deal at the time, though.

I love my Sams Club membership. I've had it for years. Definitely worth the $40/yr, imo.

I got a Sam's membership, but I never really put it to use, except when there's a party.

That's when I get my money's worth.

I don't drink beer, but they do have the best deals on wine..

That's when I load up, which reminds me I need to stock up.
