California school wins opener with amazing Hail Mary

By Cameron Smith

When fans think about famous "Hail Mary" passes, the two names that inevitably come to mind are Doug Flutie and Kordell Stewart. Now, after one of the most amazing last-second plays you'll ever see, Flutie and Stewart might have to make room for Kingsburg (Calif.) High School quarterbackGarrett Steele. And thanks to YouTube, we can all see just how magical the last-second play that gave Kingsburg a 19-15, season-opening win over San Luis Obispo really was.

Pretty cool.

That QB and WR must have felt like gods the next day at school.

Probably pulling skirt left and right after that.

How in the world does the defense let two guys get behind all but 1 defender? That kind of takes some of the "greatness" away from this play.

I'd imagine the chances of a successful hail mary go WAAAAY up if you keep the play alive for anywhere close to as long as that QB did.

They rushed five defenders, so at the start it was 6 vs 5. At :12, you can see a 6th defender, so it's 5 vs 5 behind him, and you can see that guy later on in the QB's face at the LOS (Jim Marshall football smarts). One of the receivers comes back to the QB as he's scrambling, and it looks like 3 defenders follow him.

So the defense ended up with 9 guys within 15 yards of the LOS and had two defenders vs four deep.
