My buddies and I are looking to take a 10-day trip from Dallas to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and then on up towards Southern Utah. Has anybody been out there before that could give me some advice on where to go/where not to go? We're all avid hikers just looking to pitch a tent out in a national park somewhere (college student budget). I've been looking at Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Escalante, Canyonlands, etc., but yet I want to hear from someone thats actually been there. Thanks

Angels Landing and the Narrows in Zion's Canyon are great hikes. The Narrows is not for amateur hikers. You need a permit for it and start early or camp. The Narrows is an all day hike. One of the best. You do go through the Virgin River, so expect to get wet.

In Bryce Canyon the Navajo Loop taking you by Queen's Garden is beautiful.

I used to live in St. George, UT and I hiked Angel's Landing all the time. Love that hike. About 2 or 3 miles with a good ascent and some great views.

Definitely go to Bryce. Do not miss Bryce. It is awesome.
I agree. I wish I had hiked more of it to be able to give him good advice, but I have only hiked the Loop.

Utah is under siege this time of the year because it is so dry and hot. Many, many fires are going on around parts of Utah, so be careful with campfires, cigs, or firearms, because if you start a fire and they catch you...you have to pay for the folks to put it out. One little spark can start a huge fire. One was started by a backhoe hitting a rock and the spark started a huge fire. Another fire was started from target shooting.

I mean, it is nasty here in Utah with all the fires.

All the places mentioned are great, majestically, in some sense! It is the west, the old time west.

Stay on trails and don't get stupid by wandering off...you can get in some serious trouble finding your way back. Watch out for snakes, make sure you have plenty of water, and last but not least...let others know where you are going, just in case. It's a vast area and trouble can find you if you are not careful. Be prepared for the desert.

Oh, and enjoy and have fun!

:)

Thanks for the info! Do I need to reserve a permit before I go for the hikes or is it first come first serve?

It used to be first come first served, but that was 20 years ago. So things could have changed. The Narrows is the only one you need a permit for. Best hike I have ever been on.
