So in looking at 2004 I broke down the picks that Vinny threw and noticed something striking. In Vinny's 20 picks 10 were thrown to Key!

Here are the breakdowns...

KJ - 10
TC - 4
TG - 2
DW - 1
AB - 1
JW - 1
QM - 1

I realized he also had a lot more attempts than some of these guys but not to this degree.

JW had 122 attempts and only one pick that was thrown his dirrection. Compare that to 125 attempts and ten picks towards Key.

Also what in the world is wrong with Copper? He had only 7 catches and 4 picks!!! He was targetted 20 times, meaning that 20% of the time he was thrown too the ball was intercepted! And he only caught the ball 35% of the time.

Obviously it's not always the WRs fault just as it's not always the QBs fault. But numbers this odd certainly do raise some flags.

Usually a large number of picks signifies that

A) You aren't seperating from the coverage
B) You aren't running the right routes
C) You aren't closing on the ball

I can see Copper making the last two mistakes, but a vet like Key... I have to assume it's something else?

I recalled one game where key ran the wrong wrote through the middle that led to a pick. the problem last year was Key was the #1 receiver, so defenses key in on him. That leads to more pics.

The Copper stat is strange though.

Key gets leverage and position. I think his separation days are behind him, although Big Bill did mention that Key is in better shape this year than he was last season. We'll see...

I dont have any specific numbers breakdown but it seemed to me that Vinny forced the ball in Key's direction when he wasnt open a lot after Glenn went down so that maybe inflates that number a bit

I think Vinny got to the point that he threw at Keyshawn even when he knew he was covered... Vinny's old age or excessive trust in Keyshawn? Probably some of both.

Maybe he just felt he had no other option with a new, recently-injured Morgan and two rookies as alternative options... But it sure was frustrating to watch.

Whoops, Deane already mentioned it...

Wonder if that means Key's numbers drop dramatically this year since he won't Vinny throwing to him.

By the way....

Crayton had 16 passes thrown to him and caught 79% of them with no picks

Copper had 20 passes, caught 35% and had 4 picks...

I know who I want to make the team!

Keyshawn's routes should be no further than 15 yards. That's where i think he can be effective. I pray to baby Jesus that Glen doesn't get hurt again.

Yea, keep in mind Copper was likely a last read and a squeezed ball. However, since Key is not a "deep" receiver, ths comparison vs Jason is of some value, though you have alot of LB coverage on JW vs DB's on Key.

At any rate, with a healthy Whitten and Glenn, I see Key starting to whine for the ball at about game 5:)

heh I had forgotten about KJ moaning, or Meshawn as many call him. He shouldnt be a number one WR in the NFL right now, he is a solid number two who has good hands and should be able to get us steady yards each down if needed.

As for can he get seperation, I guess he must be able to otherwise he wouldnt have caught any passes last year ?

As for him kicking up a fuss, I dont know if he will really, and I dont see him being able to cause to many problems. Just wait until we end up getting a WR via draft (not that there are any great prospects coming through?) or FA that will replace him at the #1 depth chart spot, then we might see something :)

I'd guess if Parcells has anything to say about it ( ), Keyshawn will be the no. 1 guy out there if he's 80% healthy or better. Of course, it's obvious he is no longer more than a good possession guy....

Key was also playing hurt most of the season last year.Is he a deep threat,no.Will he sacrifice his body to make the catch? YES!!

I watched the games last season(anyone else?), Key still can get separation, he did blow a few routes that led to interceptions; but most were on Vinny for forcing them to Key or just making bone headed decisions.

Keyshawn inst a deep threat really, but he's good in the redzone and as possession WR. He had a good season considering how bad the RB situation was for half the season, and then him being the only healthy WR with experience out there. He's big, and powerful, and we havent had a WR like that since Irvin. Irvin merely was just alot better
