Do you think Romo can take us deep into the playoffs and if so what is the strategy we need to follow in order to get there?

Many of the run 1st or run more posts get misconstrued and twisted on this board so I'm going to try and clarify what many believe this team needs to do in order to compete with the tough competition, ie.. The Chargers, The Saints, and then go deep into the playoffs.

We need to start off the game running the ball on 1st down and manageable 2nd downs consistently. We sould use Felix/Choice and move Barber back to his strength which is short yardage situations, goal line, and late 4rth quarter closer where he earned his Pro Bowl status once. We should continue to run the ball in this manor until they stop it or until they bring up their safeties, then we hit em with play action deep, every 3 or 4 series, and every time we see single coverage or a mismatch. We should also incorporate some crossing routes and move Austin around to get him some mismatches or single coverage.

Once teams start to stack the box and consistently stuff the run (Like that ever happens,) we can gradually start to throw more passes. Find out which receivers are hot and get them the ball. If one of them keeps dropping passes, sit their *** down and bring in somebody else for 2-3 series. We should take all the underneath stuff the opposition gives up all day long and only throw the ball 20 yards or more if there is a mismatch, single coverage, or we're down by two scores and getting desperate, specifically later in the game if that happens. If the game is still early and the run is still consistently getting us down the field we shouldn't panic, we need to continue running the ball and doing what works. History has shown us that when we hit the panic button to early Romo gets erratic and he turns the ball over.

Now when the other team starts to stack the box and stuff the run we can burn em deep a few times. Once that happens they will move back the safeties and the run game will open back up. If Felix and Choice are averaging 5 yards a carry or more then they need at least 10-15 touches a piece if not more. If we can control the clock and keep the oppositions offense off the field our defense will stay fresh and we will have a chance of winning the tuff games and going deep into the post season. Especially against a guy like Brees. If we can keep his offense off the field the majority of the game our defense might have a shot at making a few stands, especially if they are fresh and rested.

The strength of this team is the run and our O-line is built for a power style ground game. If this O-line has to pass protect all day they will get edgy (As they always do) and start committing those false start and holding penalties. The reason why we see so many false starts is because they are big and slow and they are trying to get a jump on the speed rushers. Another problem with passing to much is that Romo is not a 40+ Pass Attempt Guru and he takes a beating back their since all teams have to do at that point is pin back their ears and blitz. The only thing that consistently alleviates the pressure is a solid ground game, short quick passes, screens, and dump offs to the rb's in the flats & soft spots of the field. We need to figure out a way to get Felix the ball in space along with a few plays to Ogletree, Bennett, and Austin.

Short passes and running the ball is the key to beating the tuff teams and going deep into the playoffs. If Tony has to throw the ball 40+ times a game we are gonna see turnovers (As usual,) multiple drives will stall (As usual,) and our Defense will get worn down resulting in another heart wrenching loss. We've seen this time and again for the past 4 years using the pass happy strategy, it just doesn't work with this group, besides we have the best TRIO of backs in the league and if we move them to their proper roles they are unstoppable, in accordance we have the maulers on the O-line to grind it out. I can see us running the ball 35 times a game using all three backs and seriously dominating anybody in the league. We've seen Felix and Choice break some really nice long runs, even Barber as slow as he is occasionally breaks one, that alone proves that our O-line is more than capable of mauling the competition in the trenches.

If you have a different view then post your strategy. Let's hear how you would run this offense. What do we need to do to win big?

It's becoming obvious to many that we can start off with a 70/30 run 1st, pass second strategy, and then gradually increase the pass as teams sell out and consistently stuff the run. The ratio would end up 60/40 leaning on the run more down the stretch because our three-headed monster is just that good, now let's use it....:a-team: :a-team: :a-team:

Romo is just one part of the team. Ware, Ratliff, Spencer, Romo, Williams, Austin, Barber III rt al all have to do their part for this team to succeed.

Well yeah that's a given. I made this thread around Romo and the offensive strategy mainly because there is all that December talk as well as not running the ball enough threads...
