Congrats. Almost as good as Mike Trout on cover of NHL 2K22.
This will be interesting to watch. I mean, I have no idea what will happen but, if sales go up, I wonder if it will be attributed to Parker. If sales go down, same question.
The only people playing sports games anymore are dedicated to the game and have been for years. 2K, Madden, NCAA are all supported by hardcores so it's hard to imagine it will make a difference either way.
I used to play sports games, but once you start seeing the same stupid flaw in the game for years on end, it sucks.
This is not true but whatever. The point is not a financial study, per say. The point was a study in how society will view this depending on the outcome. They did this because they are trying to drive this, the WNBA is not selling and they are trying to drive market by using her likeness. But it will be interesting to see what happens once the outcome manifests itself, one way or the other. The financial decision is different, and easy to be honest. The reaction from society will be interesting to watch.
The mid-teen and younger crowd has moved to the Battle Royal format, and co-op team-based competitive play. Apex Legends and League of Legends have over 100M players each. Sports games aren't the draw they were when I was a teen and they definitely don't comprise the percentage of the player pool that they did at their peak.
It wouldn't surprise me if they are trying to give the WNBA a bump, but I don't think it will deter anyone who plays the games from actually playing.
Madden was the 4th best selling game of 2020, behind the CODs and something called Animal Crossing. NBA 2K was 13th, FIFA was 15th and MLB was 18th. There is still a lot of money in Sports related gaming. Gaming grew 20% in 2020 and that's from a healthy increase in 2019.
Add to the the huge influx of of gamers who are adults and the market for Sports Gaming is still very strong and very lucrative.
Game sales don't tell the whole picture because many games are free-to-play. Like all the battle royal games are free in hopes they can microtransaction the player pool $1.99 at a time, and it works. If you look at the average number of players, that's where you see a different story.
