Carpenter at MLB?

Didn't we play the 4-3 when Dat was here?
I don't know why but carpenter looks like a cross between Dat and Randy White.

It would be unreal if Carp played to that level.

We've played the 4-3 for the entire franchise's history except for the last two seasons. The 4-3 defense was horrible in 2004, our last time using the defense and we actually got *less* QB sacks under the 4-3 with Zimmer as D-Coordinator than with us using the 3-4 under Zimmer.

Putting Carp at MLB in the 4-3 may help him a bit since he's likely to be protected, but we still don't have a weakside backer and our 4-3 SAM backer. Truth be told, the position that Bradie plays in the 3-4 doesn't require a ton of being able to take on the blockers. But whether we're in the 4-3 or 3-4, Carp has to get better at taking on blockers unless you want him to be the equivalent of a Colts LB. He's getting better each week, hopefully a year of the offseason will help him make significant progress and hopefully whomever is the coach won't be afraid to have him compete with Bradie for the starting spot.

I think Carpenter could work well at Bradie's spot. He needs to get better at run defense (which he has been in the past few weeks), but he works pretty well in space and looks pretty solid in coverage for the most part. If Parcells comes back next season and doesn't given Carpenter the chance to compete with Bradie (unless he has Carp at LOLB) I'd be pretty disappointed.

In the 4-3, Carp can play MLB but I think he's better suited to play the SAM backer there. Still, it's not the 3-4 or the 4-3.

Under Zimmer, we've averaged 25 sacks a season when we played the 4-3/Cover 2. But under Zimmer in the 3-4 we've averaged 34 sacks. And remember, the 2004 defense was far worse than this defense and that was a 4-3 scheme.

So unless you want to keep Zimmer around, I see no reason for wanting to go to the 4-3 over the 3-4.

The difference has been in Ware more than in the 4-3 vs 3-4 even though he played in both. He is developing into a real beast even with their O scheming against him.

Return to the 4-3, and leave Carp on the outside, with urnett on the other side. Ayodele can play the middle. I'd trade James for a 4th round pick.

Burnett is just about as bad in coverage as Bradie is. And no way shape or form is Ayodele fit to play MLB in the 4-3. In the 3-4 he plays the JACK ILB spot which mostly consists of him just having to take on blockers and defend against the run. In the 4-3 at Jacksonville he plays the SAM backer position which was a bit similar, but asked for more pass rushing and coverage responsibilities. I don't see how the 4-3 is the answer unless you think Zimmer is a good D-Coordinator. If I had it my way in a perfect world, we'd play mostly 3-4, some 4-3, and then the nickel. But we simply don't have the personnel for the 4-3 and we weren't good with the 4-3 when we had the personnel for it.

And that's because Ware is better at pressuring the QB in the 3-4 than in the 4-3, mainly because he really doesn't have the moves to put his hand in the dirt and make a ton of sacks. In the 3-4, there's a bit more confusion as to what he's going to do and he's able to get out in more space between the blocker, so he can just either speed rush or bull rush...which are the only 2 moves he has. The three big reasons why we don't rush the passer well is that lack of a pass rush from our blitzes...mainly due to horrible disguise and the fact we hardly stunt or zone blitz....the DE's aren't good against the pass...and we need better play from the LOLB spot.

I think if we can find a Ware clone in the first round we should take him. Of course, we'd still have to ditch Zimmer. But we could probably have the first rounder play the ROLB spot and then have Ware play the LOLB spot since he's got the experience and has been great at defending the run this season.

Merriman basically plays like a end anyway, he blitze 80% of time

Carp does show alot of fluidity now. He moves like the OLD TYPE of linebackers I was used to seeing.

The thing about Hawk, Schlegel and our Carpenter is that they all seemed to have extremely good instincts. I think it took awhile for Carpenter to work his way to thru the depth that the cowboys have as a 3-4 team. Not to mention that NOBODY thought that Ellis would take to OLB like the duck to water that he did.

I wouldlike to see Carpenter at MLB.

In recent weeks I have noticed an inspired, agressive young man.
He is quick and he is strong.

Earler in the year I called him a bust. I was wrong.
This coaching staff is making talented players look like fools.

The real fools are the coahes standing on the sidelines.

PS:I don't know what to do with James. OLB?...but he can't cover OR is he playing out of position?

Shanle was 10 times the player Carpenter is.....for much cheaper too.

Right now looks like another Ohio State bust....we should have drafted Marques Colston but once again Sean Payton laughs last. :banghead:

Munchis......Out!!
