Carter's Cowboys Mock 3.0

I would be willing to bet that 70% or more of starting linebackers in the league were drafted in the third round or later.

And how many are actually good? Isn’t that what you are going for here, upgrades on Smith and LVE? For example, the Eagles three starting LBs suck, so telling me “starting” LBs come after the third round isn’t telling me much.

Again, if you want a legitimate upgrade at LB in this draft and a guy who can step in and make an impact right away, it’s likely going to have to come early in the draft. Unfortunately since we ham and egged FA and have serious holes at DT and S and CB, I suspect LB isn’t as high a priority as you would like. They likely aren’t taking one at 10 and unless one falls, I have doubts they will take one at 44 too.

My gut says if they take a LB, it’s a project type like Bernard.

You seem great at moving the goalpost to suit your own claims. My point stands. It’s completely foolish to think only players taken in the first two rounds are ever any good. Actually it’s idiotic. And I don’t think we’re looking to replace Smith or LVE this season. We need a third starter. Barring injury, those two are going to start this year. Not drafting at least one LBer this year would be beyond stupid.

There's no moving goal post here. Lamenting no LBs in this draft class doesn't make much sense to me because at the end of the day, they likely aren't going to take one that is all that impactful, especially early. It will be a Bernard type, at best. So I can't get upset that they didn't roll a LB with a 4th round comp pick, IMO.

Note, if they take a LB, fine by me. I don't have an issue with it. But I won't get worked up if we have a draft and we didn't throw a late pick or two at LB who likely would never be anything more than a backup/special teams guy.

So, based on your “thoughts”, why should we even bother with drafting anyone after the second round? Your posts are just, Wow! Every single NFL team is constructed with more players drafted in rounds 3-7 (along with UDFAs) than 1 and 2. I guess you’re one of those guys that believes teams have to have All Pros at every position in order to compete. You’re not dealing in reality.

That's a bizarre response to my point. To me, anything after the third is really a crap shoot. A lot of it is just luck. If they take a LB later in the draft, great. If they don't, again, great. You seem bothered that they wouldn't use any pick on a LB. To me, unless that LB pick is coming early in the draft, I am not really going to worry about what we do late in the draft whether that be a LB or WR or TE or OL or DT. It's all a crap shoot at that point anyway. The hit rate on those picks is extremely low.

So if this draft goes by and they don't take a LB, I don't see that as some sort of draft failure that you think it would be.
