There seems to be a lot of confusion in regards to cap dollars vs cash. Just dropping this video here…I think it’s certain Cowboy-relevant at this time given their current contract issues. This is John Middlekauff interviewing Jake Rosenberg (who was basically Howie Roseman’s understudy until recently). I think the entire video is worth watching, but it is rather long. The cap vs cash stuff is right around 42:30 - 47:30

Especially at the 45:51 mark. Listen to what he says starting there.

Jerry had never had any trouble coming up with cash to get anything done
but some of the franchises do
Some of them would have to sweat some to come up with say $200 million guaranteed. Probably have to take out short term loans.

Right. It’s basically shows that owners or GMs can sign/extend who they want if they really want to. In the Cowboys case, Jerry can…he just doesn’t want to.

Yes. You can sign a ridiculous number of players if you want to. At some point it becomes a headache to manage. Like the guy said in the video, you have to have some forward thinking. They seem to not want to complicate things by not putting too much up on credit.

I've heard the Jones boys say it, we spend most of the cap every year. People repeat it. But that's not the cash. You could spend 400M and still be under the 255M cap. The cap is not how much money you spend. It's what counts now.

I wonder if this is what Dak meant with his current comments: “the money is there to get the deal done”. You just know that the good agents are educating their clients with this sort of knowledge. At the end of the day, it really is what does the team want to do with the player.

Bingo.

But what the Cowboys do is use the cap to cover their cheapness at times. They expect the average fan to not understand the cap and truly believe that every year they are up against the cap it's because they are putting in as many resources as possible. But cash spent over the last decade tells the true story.
