Berkeley Scientists Discover an “Instant Cosmic Classic” Supernova

A supernova discovered yesterday is closer to Earth — approximately 21 million light-years away — than any other of its kind in a generation. Astronomers believe they caught the supernova within hours of its explosion, a rare feat made possible with a specialized survey telescope and state-of-the-art computational tools.

The finding of such a supernova so early and so close has energized the astronomical community as they are scrambling to observe it with as many telescopes as possible, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

Joshua Bloom, assistant professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, called it “the supernova of a generation.” Astronomers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and UC Berkeley, who made the discovery predict that it will be a target for research for the next decade, making it one of the most-studied supernova in history.

Complete Story

Just an interesting fact for you guys.

As most of you know, a Supernova is when a star explodes. It's probably the most violent and powerful thing that can happen. The only thing that is probably worse would be the act of *being* a blackhole. Then again, we don't know exactly what that means for sure.

Anyhow, back on the interesting fact topic. All matter that is as heavy or heavier than Iron was created during the act of a star Supernova. Lighter matter can be created in stars that have not Supernova, but heavier mass is only created during a Supernova. (this is basically because heavier mass takes more energy for fusion than they give off. Meaning the sun would consume itself the second it started producing iron or mass heavier than iron. Which is what happens and causes the act of Supernova!)

What this means: If you are wearing a gold or platinum ring, (or iron for that matter) you are wearing mass that was created is an incredibly enormous explosion that would make the Hiroshima nuclear blast look smaller than a static shock from a carpet in comparison. That ring or other jewelry is the product of 100% pure unadulterated violence of the highest order!

That's awesome stuff. I think that if I could go back and do it all over again, studying the cosmos would have been my field of choice in college. They didn't offer it at West Point, though.

I'm currently reading the book "The Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene. This book basically puts the Universe and Superstring / M theory in layman's terms. (ie. it doesn't talk about the mind crushing math evolved) The book is basically "the universe, for the rest of us." I would highly recommend it, but if you prefer to watch it instead, head over to Youtube and watch the show PBS made about it with Brian Greene as the narrator. It's cut into 19 parts. (a total of about three hours in length). Being broken down in to 7-10 minute segments like chapters make it easy to watch over the course of a few days or weeks if you can't sit down and watch the entire thing.

It will really throw a monkey wrench into how you think the Universe actually works! :laugh2:
