DALLAS (AP) – A Los Angeles man must serve more than 24 years in prison for leading what prosecutors say was a drug ring that included ex-Dallas Cowboy Kurt Vollers.

A federal judge in Dallas on Friday sentenced 35-year-old John Patrick Newton.

......

Investigators say Newton, sentenced to 292 months, leased an apartment in Irving to store, distribute and manufacture marijuana.

Vollers and two other co-defendants last spring pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute marijuana. Vollers faces a maximum 40 years in prison when he’s sentenced March 25.

will these former cowboys players ever learn?

That must have been a huge weed operation for 40 years to be on the table. What a shame.

Newton..... Almost had me going.

The friend, named John Newton in a court document, climbed into a 2003 BMW belonging to Mr. Vollers and fled the location but was quickly captured, records state. Police found 77.5 pounds of marijuana in the apartment, as well as $2,202 in the vehicle, records state.
Mr. Newton also faces a drug charge, but no other information about his case was available. He could not be reached for comment.
Police then went to Mr. Vollers' Coppell residence, where he allowed them to search the home. An officer found a black bag containing $380,810. Court records indicate that police were told the cash belonged to Mr. Newton, who stayed in Mr. Vollers' spare bedroom, records state.
Mr. Vollers told police that he helped his acquaintance transport "several vacuum seal bags, distribution baggies and labeling papers" to the apartment, records state. He also told investigators that his fingerprints would probably be on the "distribution baggies" that contained marijuana, records state.

40 years? That's a long frikkin time...especially in relation to people getting 3 and 5 years for murder.

Not that I condone what he was doing or anything.

The 40 years is the max, since he plead guilty and apparently cooperated with police he probably made a deal for a shorter sentence.

Nate got caught twice and he still managed to get only one to count against him and got off pretty lightly.

A friend of mine told me this one the other day:

The parole officer

Years ago DC.com had a female intern who was working with the team at Training Camp. She created an account here and posted some info just like Dale used to. Her football knowledge was about as extensive as a postage stamp. The one thing she ever said that I do remember was that she was scared to ride in an elevator alone with Vollers. She said he was huge and he talked to himself.

Right on que former cowboys players getting arrested. Hopefully this crap will end, two more days and the national media will be here for two weeks and everything about this city and its team is going to get crapped on.

so hopefully no one else gets in trouble to throw fuel on the fire.

yep, but the issue is its a cowboys former player in the news for trouble.

the national perception of the cowboys is that they are criminal drug addicts still to this day in many parts of the country...

so hopefully all this stuff will stop!
