NFL.com was talking to Telesco and the guy just seems to have the big picture in mind.

After landing the Offensive Rookie of the Year (Justin Herbert) with the 6th pick overall last year, he had this to say about the 2021 draft.

"As we go into the draft, we're drafting players, not positions," Telesco told reporters Friday, per a team transcript. "That's kind of the way that we have to look at it. We're not just trying to fill out the team for opening day in 2021; this is how we look at it. This isn't just 'GM speak.' You have to look at this year, and then 2022, 2023, 2024. That's what we're drafting these players for. We don't look at it as far as, 'Hey, what positions do we have to add to?' We're drafting players first, and then we go from there. It's players more than positions.

"I'm pretty confident that we won't be drafting a quarterback real early this year. Other than that, everything would be on the table."

Telesco also pushed back this week on the presumption that L.A. needs to target offensive line or else.

"Let's not forget we need to add talent amongst the whole football team. We're trying to build a balanced football team," Telesco said

But yet they haven't been able to get a decent offensive line in over a decade. Needs to be a balance there.
Yeah, I like his longer-term, non-knee-jerk, panicky approach, but you do need to fill needs.
I think he is not saying you don't, except that you don't look at just this year but further out.

They are not one player away from winning it all, for example.

there are few things I hate more than the cliche “we’re not one player away” which is used often to justify not going after a top level player by losing franchises

Did the Bucs or Philly or Giants know they were one player away in the off season before they won the SB? Of course not. If you want to win and expect to win you acquire talent anyway you can

We are talking the draft here, not for sure known quantities of existing NFL players.

If anything...those teams back up what that Chargers GM stated.

They did not trade away the farm to get a single player...although QBs are always an exception..

That is the point.

The Bucs were an unusual deal with Brady...though even then, they paid him below market.
And of course, it was not via the draft....which is FAR more uncertain than known NFL quantities.

And nobody would argue that one single player launched Philly or the Giants in the Super Bowl.

You build the best all-around team you can and let the chips fall where they may. Sometimes--like with Philly and the Giants--you get lucky as hell, win it all, then go back to mediocrity.

Of course that has to be the philosophy.

You're HOPING that who you take will be on your team in ten years.

That should not be based on immediate need...for the most part.

Nor do I understand all these mocks that try to cover every hole as if they will all pan out as legit players.

McCarthy and Nolan said the exact same thing last year..

And they were right if they did say that.
The 2020 draft was not the problem, but even if it had been, you do still actually have to pick the right players with your picks.

And as much as they liked Diggs, they did still end up getting him without using both our 2nd and 3rd to trade up in a panic to get him.

If anything, in hindsight, they maybe could've traded DOWN from 17 if Minnesota had offered 23and 89 to move up.
All-NFL Rookie WR Jefferson AND All-Rookie CB Danzler for Lamb might've been pretty sweet

He says he doenst think about need, then admits he does when talking about not taking a QB. So it basically boils down that he is looking at adding talented players at positions of need. Doesnt need a QB so he isnt looking there.

Nope, the draft is never about the upcoming year but long-term effect.
