...Good numbers. Very comparable to the other big names we've been discussing/wanting, but he's a much better kickoff man than any of the rest of them. What's the downside, I'm missing?

I don't understand why were even talking about him. He's a Dolphin, and its very unlikely that the Dolphins are goign to let him go.

Because reports are going around that the Dolphins are going to let him go and sign Vanderxxx

Miami may cut him -- or they might want to trade him. He's still under contract.

He's got a great leg but his accuracy isn't consistent from shorter yardage. Still, major upgrade if we can get him. And BP would love his kickoff ability.

Miami did cut Mare already hes free to go sign elsewhere

he is asking to be traded or released. Thats why.

He is also younger than the others.

Mare = 33 yr. old
Vinateri = 34 yr. old
Vanderjagt = 36 yr. old.

Mare was released because he refused to take a paycut.

He was scheduled to make 1.4 million next year.

per John Clayton blog

Kicking up a storm? Monday's most interesting visit was Mike Vanderjagt in Miami. Olinda Mare is the Dolphins' $2 million-a-year kicker, but if they like Vanderjagt, there could be a change ... Patriots wide receiver David Givens visited the Titans but wasn't ready to decide which team will get him to sign a contract. Givens wanted to spend an extra day getting to know Nashville before he made his final decision. He could go back to the Patriots. He's also visited Miami and Houston.

Mare is still a Fin. :cool:

Yes he was asked to take a paycut and refused.

No, he hasn't been cut yet, although its probably inevitable at this point.

DOLPHINS NOTEBOOK
Team denies report about Mare
BY JASON [email protected]

A Dolphins source denied a published report that the team asked kicker Olindo Mare to take a pay cut and that he declined and asked to be released.
All of that came in the wake of the Dolphins having Pro Bowl kicker Mike Vanderjagt in for a visit Monday.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus didn't seem terribly upset with the idea of Mare being possibly cut.

''Don't cry for Olindo if he gets let go,'' Rosenhaus said. ``There will be plenty of takers for him if he's out on the street.''

Mare is set to have a base salary of $1.4 million this season.

Vanderjagt is the most accurate kicker in NFL history at 87.5 percent. Mare is fifth at just over 82 percent. Vanderjagt also missed a critical kick in Indianapolis' playoff loss to Pittsburgh and has been a controversial character off the field because of his criticism of quarterback Peyton Manning and coach Tony Dungy.

Also, Vanderjagt is poor on kickoffs, an area where Mare has excelled. Mare is annually among the league leaders in touchbacks. Vanderjagt has usually had to have someone else do kickoffs in his place.

I would offer them a 7th right now for Mare. There are other teams besides us that need a kicker. 7th rounders often don't make the team or contribute much. And Mare has a reasonable deal which we would get WITHOUT paying a signing bonus so his salary would be his cap hit.

Mare's contract:

2006 1.4m
2007 1.5m
2008 1.5m
2009 1.5m

Stop thinking so proactively DL. We all know that great kickers are available at your local WalMart. Why try to sign a quality guy before he gets out on the street and is available to the other teams who are looking for a good kicker?

Haven't you heard of Shawn Suisham? [/sarcasm off]

proactive? we don't need to give up a pick. Rosenhaus knows exactly who wants Mare at this point. There aren't many teams out there looking to spend $$ on a kicker.

I'd take him in a minute at those numbers. He's capable of hitting pressure kicks and does KO consistantly.

Absolutely on a draft pick, too..as long as it's not too high or is a 2007 pick.

This is exactly the sort of development I think Dallas is counting on happening where we can find reasonable talent in need of a new home.

Go for it.

BP's in Florida, in fact right here in Jupiter closeby looking at Spring Trailing, I believe.

Maybe I should just go over to Roger Dean Stadium and grab a box seat and some cotton candy and wait him out to discuss this..?

:laugh2:
