OMG....what an idiot I am.....wife and I received a check out of the blue yesterday from the IRS for $2800....nothing else in the envelope....no explanation....nothing. Finally figured out what it was....for some reason, I didn't fill out the block for the COVID Recovery Rebate Credit in 2021....although I did in 2020. Guess that's what you get for doing taxes the old skool way on paper....call me crazy, but I enjoy it. Anyway, some of you may be receiving a surprise if you haven't already. Peace, and Happy New Year!!!

According to the link, if I'm reading it correctly, only those who didn't get one or more Stimulus Checks will receive this.

That is essentially true but it is more about the total amount that should have been distributed via the stimulus checks. Interested folks should go to:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-account-for-individuals

This is where anyone can sign into their IRS account (ID.me registration is required). After logging in, it is necessary to navigate to:
  • the Records and Status tab
  • the Tax Records link on the submenu
  • the Economic Impact Payment Information (EIPI) section in the lower right hand side of the page
The EIPI section lists stimulus payment years of 2020 and 2021. The 2020 and 2021 sections should be expanded (click on the year). There, it displays the stimulus Type and Amount.

The amount is the key. If someone did not receive stimulus checks with amounts that equal the Amount listed, they should receive an additional payment within a month for the difference.

Individuals will not receive a check if their stimulus checks equaled the amount listed. The IRS is simply paying out any monies due to anyone who did not receive their full amount.

So, it doesn't matter how much money you earn? I earned too much for stimulus checks. Is this different?
This process is only available to individuals who did not receive the total amount of stimulus checks either mailed or directly deposited. Do your recall receiving any of the following mailed IRS notices between 2020 or 2022?
  • Notice 1444
  • Notice 1444-C
  • Notice 1444-B
  • Letter 6475
These notices informed individuals who were only eligible for the stimulus checks and the amount of each stimulus check being distributed.

How secure is this ID.me site? It wants my photo ID, a video selfie, my phone number, and now it wants me to enter my SSN.

I balked at that point. I'm not going any further with it. If I get a check, I get a check. If not...oh well.

lol. Trust me. I am the paranoid type, so I completely understand.

ID.me is contracted by tons of federal and state agencies (such as the Treasury Department and IRS) and corporate entities for highly secure identification purposes. I think I used it for the first time several years ago. It was a mandatory sign up by one of the credit bureaus (I think Equifax..?) for freezing my credit for the three major bureaus simultaneously.

Not sure if that requirement is still in effect but that is why I ended up having an ID.me registration. I may have used it only twice since, with both times logging into my IRS account.

Here's a link to it's About Us page, if you are ever interested: https://www.id.me/about

It does matter...you have to fill out the worksheet provided in the 2021 1040 Instructions to see how much...if anything...you qualify for. I retired in Dec of 2020 so we got the full amount....the previous year, we didn't qualify for anything after doing the worksheet.

Well, if I'm ever in the predicament of having to use it, I'll do it then, I guess. The problem is that, like everything else, it's subject to hacking, and considering all the information it holds, it's got to be frequently targeted.

Yes it does. You had to qualify for the credit when you filed. From what I read adjusted gross income had to be below $73,000. If you didn't qualify then, you don't qualify for this now.

I signed up for ID.me awhile back.
It involves using your smartphone for an "ultraviolet" like face scan.
It's the official site the US Govt. requires.

So did you and your wife file jointly or separately in 2021?

Yes, but that doesn't mean it's safe, unfortunately.
They can make it as safe as they want to, but then the security requirements for you to log in would be too intrusive and cumbersome. It's hard to balance security with convenience, but ID.me is about secure with government as you can be for the general public.
