Disclaimer: No, I'm not saying the Japanese reactors will result in anything like this. Yes, I realize it's a totally different design. Just wanted to get that out of the way. :)

With all the talk of nuclear accidents lately, I watched this last night on youtube. Amazing stuff. Chernobyl happened when I was in high school, but so much of this was new to me. Of course, back then we didn't have nearly the news flow that we have now, plus the Soviets kept everything as secret as possible.

I especially have never heard about the possibility that it could have exploded a second time at up to a 5 megaton clip... I find that a little hard to believe. Maybe they meant the radiation release would've been equal to that, or maybe it really would've been that explosive. But you just wonder how they could've designed and run this thing so poorly.

It's an hour and a half, so obviously takes a big block of time, but it's fascinating IMO. Would like to hear comments from some of you on it or the disaster in general.

I found these photos several years ago, but they are really interesting. This girl rides her motorcycle around the Chernobyl-affected area and takes pictures as the area appears now.

It's not a well-designed site, but the navigation bar is on the left.

Wow, thanks for posting that, Faerluna. Amazing site she has -- nice pics and very poetic commentary on everything from Chernobyl to the WWII relics and battlefields. Still going through it all.

There used to be another blog that was up a little before she did her ride through the area. They had a video of taking a walk through Prypiat and stopping on corners to listen to....nothing.

The ferris wheel creaking in the wind was creepy. There's something unnerving about being in a city that large, with so many reminders of the people that live there, who are no longer there.

Anyway, I can't find the guy's blog anywhere. He had a link to her's when she put it up, which is how I first read her's years ago.

Thanks, I will have to watch that video when I get home.

As for the other said Faerluna noted, the page with the high res pics is really great. Some of those pics make me want to install CoD4 again. (Bloc map) :laugh2:

Chenobyl was a text book example of what not to do from design to training workers to supervisors to procedures to reactions in an emergency. If there was a way to screw up they found it.
