I don't understand why people feel the need to cheat. I guess people need other people to think they are the best when they themselves know they aren't.

I think I would feel worse for cheating than I would for just losing.

Because China is not very open with their records. Their Olympic team is controlled and funded fully by the Government and it is hard anytime you deal with them in getting the truth.

Canada had Ben Johnson and the Dubin Enquiry which showed most of our top track athletes in the mid-late 1980s were on roids at least part of the time

Again your argument is insane, per usual. How on earth you can compare an entire national coverup of the ages of Chinese gymnasts to a select few idiot national athelets doping is beyond me.

Show me were these countries were in full aware mode and regularly trying to cover them up like China does w/ its underage athletes?

Fact is all of your examples are of a single athelete being a national dissapointment, not an entire national coverup.

USTA covered up stuff, Canadian Track turned a blind eye.

...but I can safely say there was a complicit group at the higher levels of Canadian sport who did not ensure that Ben Johnson was tested properly or his camp was not informed of the numerous allegations that were circling around international track at the time.

You had to have lived in a hole if you couldn't see that Johnson was on roids. Being a former football player who used steroids it was plain as the nose on my face.

Johnson was on every major sports article in the year leading up to the Games. Maybe Canada wanted a hero so bad that the governing sports bodies felt they couldn't get in the way of a developing national hero.

In many ways I still feel that the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Track Federation wanted Johnson to win the gold and pass the drug test.

Many knew about the rumours, but they hoped a cleared drug test would make their nagging thoughts go away.

You can't imagine what it did to sports in our country. This story went from the Games to every gym, hockey rink and local watering hole.. It was a real national tragedy as so many in the nation were personally vested in Johnson's performance and supposed gold medal winning run.

Maybe the Chinese are more systematic about their approach to these matters. I can't say, but Canada was equally as guilty as any nation who allowed at the time ridiculous measures by athletes to get to the podium.

We just wanted Ben to win so badly that we were willing to turn a blind eye to the reality that he was quickly transforming in a comic book physique.

WHOA wait a minute. Flo-Jo never tested positive.

Carl Lewis tested positive for stimulants found in over-the-counter cold medicine that were banned 6 months prior to his testing... and which over 100 international athletes were tested positive for.

He has kept his medals.

Listen, I'm a big track fan (I ran it competitively)... there is NO DOUBT in the track world that the late '80s Canadian program was way more tainted than the American program.
