Coin toss at SF

Garrett did the same crap we seem to be doing lately with taking the ball when winning the toss. It’s making me wonder if it’s not an organizational thing (Jerry’s orders), but that’s for another time.

If we lose the toss, SF is deferring like most well coached teams do. Nothing can be done there.

We do play differently with a lead on both sides of the ball, so I figure that rather than our staff being full morons, and/or not a Jerry order….we don’t defer when winning the toss because they want to try to jump out to a lead. Only plausible explanation.

BUT…in this game….IF they can help it…you cannot let that SF defense with much help from the crowd, dictate the tone from the beginning.

Especially when you insist on handing Elliott the ball early. It has three and out written all over it and I hope the philosophy changes for this game.

I mean, an incompletion and an Elliott one yard gain are pretty much guaranteed to be the first two plays. Let’s not just hand them momentum….as well as the ball to start the second half.

The Bucs won the toss and deferred, and in our 1st three plays we did not run once... then gave the most obvious running formation on the next 1st down and ran poorly...

..ok guys, thanks. I missed that part of game.

Still hope, that MM prefers to defer.

After that it was lights out. If I am not mistaken we shut down Brady not on all drives but 3, one ending in an int in the end zone.

Yep, and you know what I mean about momentum, and the crowd, in a game like this. I’d really rather start on defense, get after Purdy, and get them thinking….rather than Anger in the game with 14:20 left in 1Q after they stuffed Elliott and made Dak nervous.

I've never understood wanting the ball first. I'm not sure if I remember this or just made it up in my mind, but remember something about Jason Garrett saying he likes the ball first because most teams defer and it creates more consistency for them knowing they will always receive first?

Not sure I buy into that line of thinking but it's one theory.

Electing to receive on the road is just saying I want to rile up the fans as quickly as possible. It's dumb. Give me that extra offensive possession to start the 2nd half when half the crowd is still in line for hot dogs.

I always want to defer to the 2nd half. 1st drive of the game means little but a score before halftime and a score coming out of halftime is big, if trailing you have the chance to cut into the lead and if winning you have the chance to extend your lead. Opening drive to me means a lot less.

Even when we lose the coin toss and the opponent defers, some of our fans still freak out, say we are dumb.
It’s tough to always know. When they do announce it it’s usually as the play is starting, so it’s just kind of blown off for something you waited a week to see.

The league doesn’t even keep official records on it. I know this because a friend called me out on moaning over this during the Garrett era, so I spent some time researching it. This was mid season 2018. I couldn’t confirm coin toss W/L but the Cowboys had the ball first in something like 42 of the previous 50 games, or the like. So either they were very unlucky (plausible lol) or taking the ball was an actual strategy at some point.

Or shut them up as quickly as possible. Goes both ways.

Execute and non of this matters. I think our first series has to feature at least 1 Dak RPO/designed run and 1 deep pass. I don't care if score or not, obviously preferable, but I think you have to get their defense on their heels a little about how we plan to attack them the rest of the game.

It does matter. You have that second half opening possession in your back pocket. It seems like Dak is a slow starter and they always go 3 and out.

But you’re likely to have more possessions in 1st half. It doesn’t matter.
