NFL star arrested in Akron incident
Mike Doss of Canton accused of firing shots near downtown clubs

Indianapolis Colts player Mike Doss, a former star at Canton McKinley and Ohio State, was arrested early Sunday in downtown Akron on charges of firing a gun into the air.
Police said the 24-year-old Doss, who played for Ohio State University when the team won the 2002 national championship, fired a 40-caliber handgun several times in the air while standing about 300 feet from an estimated crowd of about 500 people.
The incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. in the downtown nightclub district in the 300 block of South Main Street -- just before closing time for many of the establishments.
Police said no one appeared to be wounded as a result of the gunfire.
The NFL player was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony. He also was charged with misdemeanor counts of inducing panic, obstructing official business and discharging a weapon within the city, police said.
Doss was released Sunday afternoon from the Summit County Jail after posting $1,000 bail -- 10 percent of the $10,000 bond set by Akron Municipal Court Judge John Holcomb.
He is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Akron Municipal Court.
A spokesman for the Indianapolis Colts contacted Sunday was unaware of the incident and declined to comment. Doss could not be reached for comment at the telephone number he provided to police.
As a player at Canton McKinley High School, Doss played on two state championship teams.
For the Ohio State Buckeyes, Doss was a starter for three seasons, including starting fourteen games for the 2002 national champion OSU team.
The Colts' Web site touts Doss' accomplishments during that championship game against Miami -- saying he had nine tackles and one interception.
Doss, a safety who listed his home as Canton on the police report, made 101 tackles with the Colts his first year with the team in 2003, according to the Colts' Web site.
In 2004, he made 49 tackles and missed several games because of injuries.
