Commanders oldest NFC East team across the board

(By John McDonnell - TWP)In July, I noted that the Commanders had the oldest team in the NFL, based on bloated training camp rosters. Later that week, I noted that one expert also said the Commanders had the least amount of young talent in the NFL.

And now Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation has relentlessly combed the rosters of each NFC East team, ranking the ages overall, by unit and by position category.

* The Commanders have 14 players over the age of 30, more than the Cowboys (9), Giants (7) or Eagles (3).

* The Commanders have 4 players under the age of 23, fewer than the Cowboys (7) and Eagles (5) but more than the Giants (3).

* The Commanders have eight of the 11 oldest players in the division. If you exclude kickers and punters, they have 9 of the 20 oldest players in the division.

* The Commanders' average age is a bit more than 28 years and 3 months, or about 17 months older than any other team.

* The Commanders have the oldest offense, the oldest offensive starters, the oldest defense, the oldest defensive starters, the oldest skill position players, the oldest skill position starters, the oldest defensive front 7, the oldest defensive front 7 starters and the oldest secondary.

Every year we see articles like this .. I really wish they would only factor in the projected 22-25 starters from each team as that would actually apply common sense and logic to the equation.

When I hear "that team is the oldest in the NFL" yet look on the field and see young players all over the place, it just removes any credit from the sports writer/analyst who mentioned it.

For example, the first thing you should do is throw out the kickers and the backup quarterbacks. Kickers can be 40+ and still be better than 20 year old kickers so that has no bearing on their ability to play. Backup quarterbacks don't see the field unless they are in mop-up duty or have been named the starter.

Sorry, this has always been one of those "DUH!" things to me that I am still stunned that no writer has figured out yet.

I agree. Its a non issue thats fluid and changes with each season.

Sometimes vets come through and other times rookies step up. No one knows till after the fact. Theres something to be said for experience and the flip side is true as well, Rookies have great up side potential.

But till its played out we dont know if the 12 year vet has more in the tank then the rookie has fire in the belly.

The Commanders are old at QB, WR and RB this is going to come back to bite them as they really dont have depth at those positions either.

My gosh, under Bruce Allen, ol' George Allen's boy, they really have become the "Over the Hill Gang" all over again.
