The Commanders defense is on pace to allow the second-most total yards in NFL history. They're also on pace to allow the most passing yards in NFL history, though this year's Texans might beat them to the punch.

Can anyone remember the last time Shanny didn't have a horrendous defense? Was it the 90s?

I know that Shannahan is the offensive mind and he goes out and hires defensive coordinators to run his defensive units for him, but how many years does this have to continuously go on before you have to notice a pattern?

Like maybe you don't create a culture in your organization where defense is treated like equals or emphasized. Which might cause you to do things like trade or spend all your top draft picks on offensive players and ignore your defense. Or run off a good defense coordinator and his scheme who had proven he could work with this collection of talent, and bring in your own guy to implement a new system which doesn't fit the talent at all?

Total yards is not a great stat when looking at defenses. We held Dallas to 7, the Packers to 13, and the Eagles to 12 points. I won't defend the D in yardage, but I would point out that the Saints had the 26th ranked D last year when they won the superbowl.

If you're giving up a ****load of yards, you damn well better be getting the sacks and turnovers. Thankfully we're doing decently in both areas, and have had enough games where the yards didn't lead to more points.

But, yeah, would love it if the defense tightened up and minimized the yardage.

I'll interpret this as you're guaranteeing the Commanders win the Super Bowl.

You got stones, kid . . .

I like how you leave out the other 3 games, the games where you gave up 30 to the Texans and Rams, and 27 to the Colts...

Nah, that's next year (although the sweetness of a SB trip this year would be amazing)

There are no great teams in the NFC this year. I'd say all of the NFC East teams likely have a shot at "making" it to the Super Bowl.

If it looks like we might have a good chance of making the SB next year, the NFL will will try to strike - like they normally do when we have good teams. :D

Eh, its not like they win a prize or have a bad season, its just how Shanny is dealing with the defense he has now, if they have a better defense, and dont make teh SB, do they get a prize if he turns it around.

Sorry, yards dont always equal TDs as the Cowboys games have shown.

I think to many mediots need the stats to tell stories we really dont need to care about.

"Commanders WR"s run down the sideline more times than anyone else"

OOOOOOOOOOOO im rivited. Who cares.

compared to our FS hes the freaking Pro Bowler.

He's playing SS now. The reason he struggled before is because he was being played out of position. He needs to be close to the line of scrimmage and not 40+ yards in the secondary.

Obviously he was misused in the past. That's not where they drafted him to play, they were just forced to use him there after they lost Taylor - they thought he could succeed there, but he didn't.

You're the 1st Commander fan to admit that he's still the same safety that struggles in coverage.

He shouldn't be covering receivers, he should be covering TE's.

See, they used to put Taylor 40+ yards in the secondary; he'd run sideline to sideline and still make a lot of tackles.

They tried to use Landry the same way, but Landry doesn't have that type of ability; should be used closer to the line of scrimmage - like an extra linebacker.

He's hit or miss in coverage.

well put. I like our SS, but Landry has some ability and good play making so it could swing either way. Still a good player that would be taken on any other NFL team.

To be frank, his weakness is not necessarily coverage, it's open field tackling - he takes really poor angles.

But I thought LaRon Landry was the best safety in the NFL? hehe

Huh?

Our D is horrible on the Stat sheet. Everybody knows that stats can easily be misleading though. I think the Commanders will have a bad D until they fully turn into a 3-4. We need that dominate NT and fast Linebackers, which we dont have.
