What's this? It the yardage ranking for Dallas' pass defense. That final number offers a puzzle. How did a back seven which had the luxury of Demarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff and Anthony Spencer rushing, a top four rushing defense and good health (2009 was the first year since 2006 when both starting cornerbacks started all 16 games) take such a dip in yardage?

The answers suggest that cornerback should not be pushed from the top tier of Dallas' wish list come April.

Big D Hasn't Meant Durability

Many fans have overlooked the fragile nature of cornerback this spring, because the Cowboys anticipated trio of cornerbacks held together last season. To do so betrays a short-term memory. How often did Anthony Henry break down in a Dallas uniform? How often has Terence Newman wound up on the injured list since his body's clock hit 30?

Quite a bit. Henry signed in 2005 and spent four injury-riddled years in the lineup. He missed six games in both '05 and '07 with an assortment of sprains and pulls. His only 16-for-16 came in '06 and that was only because he soldiered on with loose bodies in a knee that locked up on him during the melt-down month of December, when the Cowboys secondary surrendered 15 touchdown passes.

Mike Jenkins stepped in on the right side and provided an increasingly tough man-to-man coverage. That said, how many of you had a sinking feeling in late August, when Jenkins rolled an ankle late in training camp and had to sit for nearly a month?

Jenkins' quick recovery provided the anchor for a corner unit which stumbled badly into the new season. Orlando Scandrick suffered the dreaded sophomore slump, giving up big plays in the slot on a regular basis through October. He improved a lot in the second half but fell off from the player who looked like he could challenge for a starting spot at the end of his rookie year.

Cornerback is a fickle position in the best of circumstances. K.C. Joyner forwarded me his collected YPA metrics from '04 through '07 and I produced a composite chart which found that very few corners could repeat their top-level metrics from year to year. The players who topped the charts in one season would drop down badly the next and rebound the next season.

The corners who maintained top 15 play every year of the survey could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Terence Newman ranked 2nd overall over that span, partly because he was durable; Newman did not miss a single start from '03 through '06. Then, something the core-area pulls and tears ensued and Newman missed 11 starts in '07 and '08. Newman made it through camp last year but started the season as if he were hurt. The Bucs Michael Clayton and the Giants receivers flambeed Newman in September. Newman kept Brandon Marshall under wraps for 55 minutes but the Broncos wideout burned Newman for the game winner in the waning minutes.

Newman seemed to find a spark at mid-season, after a very public spat with position coach Dave Campo. Newman began to play more physically. He teed up receivers and took penalties for hits which crossed the legal line. He became more aggressive on the corner and finished the season with two masterful performances against the Eagles DeSean Jackson.

The Cowboys loved their corners in December, but can they count on getting a full season from all three in '10, given the yo-yoing which goes on every year, and given Newman's touchy groin muscles?

I doubt it. Quick, name the 4th Cowboys corner. Can you do it? Do you trust him to man one of the edge positions or the slot if one of the top three goes down? Do you think '09 was the anomaly for Newman or were '07 and '08? Will Scandrick take a step forward or has he plateaued?

The Cowboys are not taking cornerback for granted. I understand they are intensely researching this year's deep crop of cornerbacks, and like several of them. They're obviously still looking for tackles and safeties but don't be surprised if you see a cornerback picked in one of the early rounds. The Cowboys can't afford to play secondary whack a mole. All they gain from drafting an Earl Thomas or a Nate Allen could be undone if one of Jenkins, Newman or Scandrick spend any time on the injured list.

This is why I was in favor of going after cromartie. Newman is getting up their in age and in my opinion leaves many plays on the field. Newman is solid, but how many times do you wacth a cowboy game and Newman is right there on the play, but can't complete it. I wouldn't be shocked if we go corner in the draft. You can never have enough quality CB's in this pass happy league.

Brandon Marshall pulled Newman's jersey and yanked him forward on that play. That enabled Marshall to get ahead of Newman, and made Newman play catchup. As a result, Newman couldn't really time his jump to knock that ball down. Newman has 41 in vertical. He shut that chump down, and Marshall had to bend the rules to make a play. No call.

Newman just hesitated on that Tampa Bay pass. There wasn't anything wrong with him. Phillips should have gone cover 2 at the end of the half, because that was their best chance to make a play. Plus, Dallas' CBs had shut them down the entire half. Why give them a free shot? Newman made several real good plays in that game. Cover up your CBs with under 2 minutes left in that situation. Newman had a real good game at TB, except for that one play. They didn't score on it, either.

Good article.

I'd still trade down before I picked a CB at #27. JMO.

Nnamdi Asomugha and Mike Jenkins were picked in late round 1. One at 28 and one at 25. It took Asomugha a couple of years to start or get going. Jenkins was a steal, because he had a top 15 grade with the Cowboys. Players like Jenkins are not supposed to fall that far. He only did, because teams were desperate for OTs and reached. That was a fluke. Flowers and Cason were drafted late in that 2008 draft.

However, if you look at the CBs drafted late in round 1 over the past decade, you will see a ton of busts. I'd be careful.

actually naming the 4th corner isnt hard at all. Allan ball has played well at two positions when he was asked to play.

Who scratched CB off the draft list? If Kyle Wilson fell to the Cowboys I would be ecstatic.

Which is why I was disappointed that Mickens didn't make it last year.

I think we co with Kyle Wilson over Iupati and most players if he's there at 27. Because for the next 8 years, he and Jenkins can provide physical, ball hawking, shut down play on each side of the field. Plus, he fills a need in the return game.

I do belive, however, that we feel very confident with Ball on the field and the main reason we'll do this is because we're trying to move Ball full time to FS and in this passing league, you need all the cover guys you can get.

Quick. Name the third Cowboys guard. Can you do it? Do you trust him to man one of the interior positions if one of the top two go down? Do you think '09 was the anomaly for Kosier or was '08? Will any of our current depth take a step forward or have they plateaued? What about outside linebacker? What if Ware gets hurt! What about center? Can Gurode make it a whole year? Help!

The Cowboys cannot afford to play offensive or defensive line whack-a-mole either. Nor at outside linebacker! Or center! Or inside linebacker! Or wide receiver!

The panic in this article is over the top. We don't even have a qualified free safety yet he is saying eschew that for a fourth cornerback.

Cornerback is not a zero need. But the rationale he is using here is demented. There are very few positions we can afford to ignore if a starter goes down or a current depth player "plateaus". But to simply designate that a high choice has to go to an area where we have three established players is ignoring the big picture.

While I think our corners 1-4 are pretty deep, I'm also of the mindset that you never pass on good value at CB in the draft. CB, OL, and pass rushers are the three positions you should NEVER be content with. I wouldn't hate seeing us take a CB on day one. Ever....and I love Newman and Jenkins.

Having said that, I'd rank our CB depth pretty high on the list of 32 teams in the league. Very high, actually.

Yep. And he's a pretty good player at CB and S, if necessary.

I wouldn't mind seeing him get a shot starting at S for us if we have a viable backup plan on the roster. That would mean backfilling his spot at swing-CB with at least a mid-round pick, though.

It's pretty simple, actually. Our opponents threw 64 more passes (we were ahead more) and were sacked 17 fewer times (our pass rush wasn't as effective in parts of the season). The yardage per play was pretty similar.

Our passer rating allowed, completion percentage allowed and TD percentage allowed all got better in 2009 than they were in 2008, so we didn't exactly take a "dip" in performance.

CBs are obviously important and the position is one of those that you never just ignore available talent with, but targeting a cb when there are more pressing needs seems overly pessimistic. I know I'd feel a lot better about Orlando Scandrick stepping into the starting line up than I would almost any other back up on the team. Injuries happen and you can't pay for a whole second roster of starters to try and insure against a drop off in play. By the end of the season every roster has injury holes that's part of the game.

I'm hoping for a CB in the 1st four rounds, it would solidify our secondary for a decade...
