I'll do a separate team post but this is just the draft.
Day 1. A+
1-29 OT Tyler Guyton, Okla.
Dallas wins the day of the late drafting teams by moving down and taking the guy they wanted most anyway at 24, because he was the only guy that could be realistically a LT. that free R3 meant being able to fill one extra hole. Lots of people don't love Guyton and that is OK. Guys I have loved have bombed and guys I hated have soared. This player was at about 25 on most boards with true LT physical traits. The value on the trade was extreme on every chart out there.
Day 2: B
2-56 DE Marshawn Kneeland, W. Mich.
3-73 G Cooper Beebe, Kansas St.
3-87 LB Marist Liufau, Notre Dame
Dallas gets fallers and steals in Kneeland and Beebe. Really love those picks. Kneeland was so high on Dane's board and that is my guy to trust.
Beebe I watched destroy teams including my own and the draft heavy UT DL. He is basically Guyton with a bit more belly.
Not in love with Marist who was generally a round 5 guy on most boards and who had terrible run stop numbers. Averaged only 3.8 tackles per game the last two seasons.
I wrote him off long ago because I didn't think there was any way a Zim team would take him. He is tremendous in coverage and I believe he will be your Kendricks cover as the nickel backer. But I wish they had traded down here or took the BPA. This badly feels like a reach for need. It could work for you could have about the 3rd version of an off ball coverage LB that has flopped in a row.
Day 3: B+
5-174 CB Caelen Carson, Wake
6-216 WR Ryan Flournoy, SE Missouri
7-233 OL Nathan Thomas, Louisiana
7-244 DT Justin Rogers, Auburn
Dallas can draft OL and they can draft late round DBs. Carson was a R3/R4 guy on most boards and can flat cover. He does have durability concerns and he hasn't had a pick since 2021. But realistically in Dallas you have the turnover guys and need a sticky coverage guy. I could see him quickly grow into an outside CB2 that allowed Bland to move back inside. Flournoy and Thomas are toolsy freaks that scouts love. Flournoy should be a good STer day 1 with his plus size/speed combo. If he learns to win at the LOS he may well develop into a rotational WR but right now would be best in 'on the move' or slot situations as he has no idea how to hand fight at the LOS.
Duke loves Nathan Thomas. That is really all that needs to be said there I think. Can expect him to keep working with Duke and develop much like Steele did. Dallas is learning to take Duke guys and let them develop in Frisco.
Rogers is a big body DT on a team that was wayyy short of those.
Love his chance to make the team just based on depth. And if you ar going to get a plodding run stuffer the SEC is a good place to do it.
I believed the Cowboys when they said they wanted to get a RB but it appears that was smoke. They ran away from good ones at many spots in this draft then took a clear back up LB at 87 and a big DT to close it all out in R7.
But I am NOT going to penalize them for that on the overall grade because I can't be mad at them for passing RB then be mad if they sign those same guys to 2nd contracts at the going rate.
I'd give the pre-draft off-season an F. Hard to find any real plan to it and certainly did not get better. (((yay for suspected 3 r5 comp picks tho huh??)))
But this draft itself is a clear B+. It has very real 'A' potential if Guyton can in fact start at LT for years.
