Free Agency Outlook: According to Spotrac, Smith is projected to earn a one-year, $7.5M deal on the open market. Pro Football Focus is a little higher on Smith and projects him to earn a one-year deal worth $10M. All in all, it seems certain his next contract will fall somewhere in the $7-10M range.

If Smith does not decide to retire, he will likely be coveted by many teams in free agency. At this point in his career, Smith will likely prioritize a chance to win a Super Bowl over a long-term contract. Teams like the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and Kansas City Chiefs have enough cap space and could potentially give Smith a better chance at winning a Super Bowl than if he stayed in Dallas. Overall, every team is always looking for excellent tackle play. Smith can give a team just that and would not require a long-term commitment, making him an extremely enticing target for many organizations.

Cowboys Verdict: The Cowboys have plenty of holes to fill on their roster this offseason, but the decision on Smith on their end is fairly simple. If Smith does want to continue playing, they need to do whatever it takes to reach an agreement on an extension before he reaches free agency. While the Cowboys might not have as high of a chance of reaching the Super Bowl as the Bengals, Lions, or Chiefs, Smith’s familiarity and comfort in Dallas might give them the advantage they need to retain him.

Prediction: Tyron Smith signs a one-year, $6M deal (worth up to $10M in incentives) with the Dallas Cowboys.

HE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THE MONEY

Okay, to say he doesn’t care about the money is not completely true so we’re a little bit sorry for even luring you in with such verbiage. What we really mean here is, it’s not all about the Benjamins for Smith. The guy just played through an eight-year deal where he was largely underpaid for a great majority of the length of his contract and how many times do you remember him complaining about it? Zero.

And when the Cowboys offered up a creatively constructed restructured deal that would put less in his pockets if he wasn’t available, Smith agreed. His $13.6 million base salary turned to just a $3 million base, a $3 million signing bonus, and the rest laced with incentives based on playing time (and playoff results). Despite a relatively “healthy” season for Smith, the Cowboys ultimately ended up paying him a few million less than his original deal.

We speak about Smith’s availability to describe his value, but it wasn’t just the quantity of games played that mattered this past year, but the quality. The version of Smith we saw last season was the film they’ll show when he’s eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was outstanding. He showed the strength, quickness, and elite-level hand work that has made him one of the game’s best over the last decade. His play was so good that he actually earned All-Pro honors for the first time in seven years.

Not only is he still playing at a high level, but the Cowboys have a lot of questions along the offensive line. If Smith isn’t resigned, it could force Tyler Smith to move back to left tackle, leaving a hole at left guard. There’s also the uncertainty of Tyler Biadasz who is a free agent this offseason. Nothing against T.J. Bass or Brock Hoffman, but the Cowboys could benefit from an extra year of service from Smith to allow them to get their affairs in order along the offensive line.

Has any beat writer posted what Smith's bonus will be for the 2024 cap regardless if he's here or not?

Remember there was a criteria for games played and a certain dollar amount he could get if he played 50%/75% etc of games.
And since 2022 he barely played the way the incentives were done it would impact the 24 cap not 23

Just a wive's tale for last season...

The cap indications are above and he's not trying to break the bank for Dallas.

2023 Regular Season Stats: 13 GS, 21 Pressures Allowed, 3.0 Sacks Allowed, 97.9 Pass Blocking Efficiency, 3 Penalties, 89.3 Pass Block Grade, 12 AV * Named Second-Team All-Pro
With a new practice plan in place, Smith remained relatively healthy this season playing in 13 games, the most he has since 2019. In his time on the field, Smith was dominant. The former first-round pick recorded a 97.9 Pass Blocking Efficiency rating and allowed just three sacks.

For the first time since 2016 and the fifth time in his career, Smith was named an All-Pro after his outstanding season. The 33-year-old tackle proved the doubters wrong in 2023 and proved he is every bit capable of still playing at an extremely high level.

I'm anticipating some OL, LB and RB help to be oncoming with the next NFL draft to come to the Cowboys in April. Perhaps some success can be affected in that time frame. Hope springs eternal, especially where the Dallas Cowboys are involved, these days. Let's not quit hoping. ;)

I disagree!
The Cowboys never know when to let go.They were lucky this last year he was fine. Time to go younger. I thought Tyler Smith did a good job when playing LT.

You can't argue against the achievement and remaining value proven this past season. Pessimism...that's on you.

Didn't his family steal a bunch of money from him early on? Hopefully he stays but he certainly deserves to go after the money for once.

he said Cowboys for life and my gut says he'll stay here under a very team friendly deal.. IMHO he owes the FO for him staying on a roster while missing a ton of games.

That number is way too low.

He's UFA next month.

Think 15-35 million.

Let him walk for than. Being honest,

now offer 6 with escalators and bonus for play time and production playoffs etc..can total 15..but no way I'm guaranteeing more than 6..

7.5 million seems fair for all sides. Doesn't change the need to address the LT of the future in the draft though because he'll likely be needed for atleast 4 or 5 games this season.

However, bringing Tyron back while the Cowboys may also need a C and RT seems to make sense. Having 2 or 3 rookie linemen in 1 year doesn't sound too reassuring.

If they cut Gallup (likely), they can use the 9.5 mill on Tyron. He might take it.

I feel Smith wants to remain a Cowboy and retire a Cowboy....as long as they give him a respectable amount he will sign for another year even if it means he could have gotten more somewhere else. At this point in his career he is not interested in breaking the bank or becoming a headache for the team. Like him or not, that is his choice and you got to respect him for it.
Team player.

i have said that Dallas should cut him, to force themselves to finally get his replacement, especially because of his annual extended time off due to injury and not able to depend on his services. But his character and the effort he gives when healthy should be respected and so i am not completely down on him anymore. If he is healthy in camp, injury free, then bring him on for another year. But still look for his permanent backup in the meantime. Draft another OT high.
