We’re back at Oxnard for another training camp. This is the 16th year the Cowboys have spent their TC days there. Which led me to finding all the locations the Cowboys have held training camp.

The Cowboys have held training camp in 16 different locations in its history, several of them more than one set of years. The first year, for some reason, they had TC in two different locations. Here are the locations for all Cowboys training camps:
  • 1960: Pacific University — Forest Grove, Oregon
  • 1960: St. John’s Military Academy — Delafield, Wisconsin
  • 1961: St. Olaf College — Northfield, Minnesota
  • 1962: Northern Michigan University — Marquette, Michigan
  • 1963-1989: California Lutheran College — Thousand Oaks, California
  • 1990-1997: St. Edward’s University — Austin, Texas
  • 1998-2001: Midwestern State University — Wichita Falls, Texas
  • 2001: River Ridge Playing Fields — Oxnard, California
  • 2002-2003: Alamodome — San Antonio, Texas
  • 2004-2006: River Ridge Playing Fields — Oxnard, California
  • 2007: Alamodome — San Antonio, Texas
  • 2008: River Ridge Playing Fields — Oxnard, California
  • 2009-2011: Alamodome — San Antonio, Texas
  • 2012-2019: River Ridge Playing Fields — Oxnard, California
  • 2020: The Star in Frisco — Frisco, Texas (because of Covid)
  • 2021-: River Ridge Playing Fields — Oxnard, California
How many training camp sites have you been to?

None during TC.
4 if you count driving through the city. Or lived in the city for a while. But not while TC was going on.

I went to Thousand Oaks in 1981 and 1983 before it was a huge media event. I was a teenager and walked to the practice sideline and actually asked Tom Landry a question while the press was asking him stuff. He graciously answered. I stood right there while Danny White tossed with Drew Pearson.

I remember Tom Landry was casually working out on a weight machine while he talked to the press. He was working quads. Believe it or not he had thighs like tree trunks. He was slim but very muscular.

That was one of
my best memories from that time of life.

Alamodome - 2011.
At the first practice - when Tony Romo ran out onto the field (returning from that shoulder injury that put him out most of the previous season) - it sounded like the crowds seeing and meeting the Beatles when they did their 1964 American Tour.

Wichita Falls and Alamodome. The SA one was the best because you could make a vacation out of it and visit the River walk etc. plus it was inside in the A/C!

Dying to go to Oxnard just because of the weather and beauty in that area. I think here in DFW it’s like 30 something days of over 100…….

Those days at Thousand Oaks were special. The Cowboys trained there for 27 straight seasons.

Never went there but when I was a teenager in the 70s, my Dad bought me a subscription to the “Cowboys Newsletter” which was delivered monthly starting around training camp. Compared to today, getting info about the team was much more difficult.

That newsletter used to have pictures from Thousand Oaks and I always wanted to go but just never had the opportunity.

I wasn’t familiar or didn’t recall our1st training camp split with the final 2 weeks at St Johns Military in Deerfield Wisconsin.

It took me awhile to find some info on it. I thought I’d share this link from bloggintheboys. Apparently according to Gil Brandts comments it was a disaster at Military Academy with decrepit accommodations.

Thousand Oaks hands down. This was where the best training camps in my opinion were held. Because of Tex Schramm ties to Los Angeles, there were large crowds, fans, media, great practices (blue white scrimmage). Jimmy and Jerry changed it. I am sure it was Jimmy wanting the heat and strain in Texas to build a Super Bowl team and told Jerry "Going back to Cali...Nope I don't think so"

However, Jerry got rid of Jimmy and said "I'm going going back back to Cali Cali"
