CBS Draft Analysis
Summary:

Mikel Jones has good quickness but overall play strength needs to improve. He brings his eyes down in space, which often leads to missing his target. Jones has disciplined eyes in zone coverage and is solid covering in space. He lacks ideal size for a consistent role and gets lost in traffic.

Strengths:

  • Disciplined eyes in zone coverage
  • Average covering in space
  • Good quickness
Weaknesses:

  • Overall play strength needs to improve
  • Brings his eyes down with tackling leads to missed target
  • Gets lost in the traffic
  • Lacks ideal size for more than a hybrid role

Scouting Report: Strengths

  • Can attack the edge with speed and has the flexibility to dip low and under the tackle's reach.
  • Jones plays bigger than his listed size, with the functional strength and motor to take on and hold ground against much bigger blockers.
  • Tougher between the tackles than many expect. Fluid and quick drop into zone, covers enough ground to be Tampa-2 "MIKE" and knows where the markers are.
  • He shows excellent awareness in coverage when dropping into zone.
  • Quick to read run, showing good agility and speed to get past blockers and finish. Experienced in coverage and gets a strong jam on outside receivers.
  • Jones can be used as a rangy run defender inside, instinctive when it comes to locating the ball with the quickness to get to it before blockers can react at the second level.

Scouting Report: Weaknesses

  • . Jones doesn’t have elite take-on skills. He’s not a violent hitter, but more of a grab-and-drag tackler. He’s also limited in man coverage, and Jones won’t be able to run with athletic tight ends.
  • Loses size battle to many tight ends and is easily pushed away on out routes.
  • Must work on using violent hands and defeating cut blocks. Also needs to build a variety of pass-rush moves.

Reads like the right type of college talent that DC Quinn can mold into a good rotation player.

Love Mikel Jones, such a fun player to watch at Cuse, but I don't think he has an NFL body or athleticism. Good nose for the football but doesn't tackle with much violence or play with much explosion. A year in an NFL weight room would probably be a really good thing, but he's more Markquese Bell than he is a true LBer.

Hard to see where he can give a whole lot more than ST work.

That said, I think he's absolutely a guy you want in your locker room and around your facility. Competitive, emotional type player who maybe you find a spot for because of those reasons.

Because he sucks.
Last year, Rashaan Evans put up excellent tackling numbers along with 2 sacks. Previous years, he was pretty good as well...

I probably shouldn't say he sucks. But he's just so limited athletically that he's a liability on the field against the pass. He's solid between the tackles but just way too easy to exploit in other areas. Gives up something like 10 yards per attempt when targeted.

Interesting player that was a play maker at the Q with over 300 tackles, 9 sacks, 4 int. But was not participating the combine, and pulled a hammy on his pro day. Is only 5-11-229 but so was a lot of very good productive 4-3 MLBs and special team players (see Dat Dude).
