In preparing a strategic business plan, the SWOT is one of the exercises you need to go through. Development of the plan is a long drawn out process that, if done properly and implemented intelligently, helps focus the organization on it's strategic goals. This enables them to make tactical decisions that move them along the path to their desired end.

There is a lot more to it than that, but I'm boring myself and probably you too. I'm just glad I don't have to do that stuff anymore.
