He's definitely a border-line failing grade this year.

But you don't go from being a pro-bowler to the one of the worst DBs in the league overnight because you 'lost it'. Scheme, execution, lack of pass rush, poor safety play, etc played a big role in his dropoff.

Mike Jenkins gets an F from me. In my opinion, his position was the absolute weakest in the secondary - yes, even moreso than Alan Ball.

Jenkins makes another cardinal sin as a CB, and he made it all the time - standing flat-footed. Defensive backs are taught, unless you're playing Cover 2 with the safety helping over the top, to NEVER break out of your pedal unless you're making a break on the ball or the player. Jenkins would stand flat-footed, not even on the balls of his feet to react, and watch the action in the backfield, leaving his zone completely uncovered.

His tackling was not so good, and very inconsistent. One play he's making an amazing open-field tackle for loss, the next he's escorting a guy up the sideline for a huge gain. I don't get it, considering how well he played in 2009, although the Cowboys played a lot more press man coverage in 2009 than they did this year -- which is probably to cover up for our deficiency at free safety. A lot of people were happy to see Ken Hamlin get released, but I maintained then and maintain now that it was a pretty big bungle by the organization to let him walk, considering his ability at FS allowed our corners to play more in the WRs hip-pocket and use instincts and not sit in zones chasing guys over the middle.

The pass interference calls were absolutely inexcusable. If he were moving his feet, he wouldn't need to reach and grab in order to defend. League-high penalty numbers for that category. Deplorable.

At any rate, he's got a ways to go if he's to be considered a continuing member of the Cowboys, in my opinion. I think releasing Terence Newman right now in favor of Patrick Peterson/Mike Jenkins would be a huge mistake. Newman is still the best corner we have, both in coverage and in tackling. While he may be entering the twilight of his career according to some (I don't see it) he still gives us the best defense in the backfield. Couple him with Peterson for a few years and continue to look for a replacement for him if/when he decides to move on to greener pastures is what I would do as a GM.

Jenkins has a lot of work to do this off-season.

I hate to grade this one...

I want to give him a B...but that "business decision" that he pulled really made me lose a little respect for him. We don't need cowards on this team.

I give him a C.

I was close to giving him a D. But I think he has loads of talent and I want to see how a real coach can light a fire under him. His penalties and that business decisions need to disappear.

Gave him a C. Maybe it was a bit generous, but he's a young player with tremendous upside (as exhibited the year before).

The entire defense was such a let down last season after surrendering record points. There's a lot of blame to go around.

Gave him a D. Might be one of my favorite Cowboys currently but he has got a lot to learn.

All the ability in the world but had a really, really bad season.

F. There's nothing worse than a corner who has lost his confidence. Does not move his feet well when playing off man, and uses his hands way too much downfield. He could have been renamed Highway 21, cause teams could always drive that way for a big play. Needs to get his head right and his confidence back, and fast.

I wish it would let me give him a "Z" . An absolute waste. All the physical talent in the world but could give two shakes about the team.

Guy has the ball....don't tackle him....ball's in the air....tackle the guy so he can't catch it.

The day Dallas dumps stupid players like Jenkins, Gurode....is the day they become a football team capable of winning it all.

He was a giant liability on defense this year. He graded out as the 3rd worst corner in football I believe. He gets an F.

The stats that were provided by someone on this board for the thread that graded TNew indicated Mike Jenkins allowed more receiving yards than any other CB in the NFL last season.

Based on that, for anybody to give Mike Jenkins anything other than an F would be crazy. He was one of the worst, if not the absolute worst, starting CB in the NFL last season.

B???? Really? On what basis? He was statistically one of the worst 5 CBs in the entire NFL last year.

F.

He has great talent, but I don't think he'll ever live up to it because of his mental makeup. He'll stand around and watch a player run by him. Not even try to make the tackle. This is not acceptable.

He also famously said that because he had a good 2009 that "he doesn't have to try as hard this year." No, Mike, to be great you have to work just as hard or harder every year. Look at Michael Irvin. Your loser attitude and play is why you don't belong on the Dallas Cowboys.

F for flat out terrible.

It wasn't so much that he got beaten a lot. I didn't really mind that as much as the fact that he seemed to just not give any effort.

If you get burnt, you get burnt but at least try to run the guy down. If you allow a catch at least make an honest attempt to tackle him. If the RB breaks free don't back peddal and run away. It was sickening.

Jenkins' Defensive Passer Rating
122.6
60 of 89, 67.4% 994 yards, 11.2 ypa, 6 td, 1 int

Take a look at that 122.6 rating. The MVP award for 2010 could have been shared by "All Quarterbacks Who Faced Mike Jenkins."

His 11.2 yards per attempt allowed ranked 80th in the NFL (4th from the bottom) according to Football Outsiders. His success rate was 78th in the league. Advanced NFL Stats ranked him 77th in success rate. That defensive passer rating of 122.6 (according to Pro Football Focus) was more than 30 points higher than Newman's, and put Jenkins 97th out of the 100 cornerbacks they graded.

This doesn't even include Jenkins' eight penalties, most on the defense.

Pass Defense: F
Run Defense: F
Big Plays: F

Overall: F

Thanks, Hos. Also casmith and Plankton. Really enjoyed your reviews.

I don't see how anyone could give Jenkins a C or better he was dreadful! Him and Ball were two of the worse players on the team last season.

Makes zero sense but whatever.

He played just fine a couple years back, last year it was PATHETIC.

In this case, I think the faults of the player heavily outweigh the fault of the staff.
