We’ve obtained the full and complete details of the four-year, $240 million extension.

The term come from a source with direct knowledge of the deal:

1. Signing bonus: $80 million.

2. 2024 base salary: $1.25 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2025 base salary: $47.75 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2026 base salary: $40 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on fifth day of 2025 league year.

5. 2027 base salary: $45 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on fifth day of 2026 league year.

6. 2028 base salary: $55 million, $17 million of which is guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on fifth day of 2027 league year.

The deal includes a no-trade clause, a no-franchise tag clause, and a no-transition tag clause. It also has four void years, from 2029 through 2032.

The contract, which had one year left at $29 million, has $129 million fully guaranteed at signing. Another $40 million is fully guaranteed by March 2025. And another $45 million becomes fully guaranteed by March 2026.

Don't now pass away and require Jerry to call in a report of survey officer.

Worse contract in professional sports
Four voidable years on the contract....register to vote.

It’s more likely that the Cowboys will keep Dak at least through 2027, with a decision to be made in 2028, when his salary is $55 million with a full guarantee of $17 million.

The maximum you can prorate a signing bonus is up to 5 years. Because it has 4 void years at the end of it, it probably means the final year (and preceding years) either auto restructure into signing bonuses or Dallas already knows they will convert them, lowering their cap hits

So it’s pretty much a three year extension. Got it.

I am a bit confused by the "guaranteed" amount being reported as $231 million.

Unless I am reading that wrong, it looks like the salaries for 2026-2028 are not guaranteed until the 5th day of those league years, so that would technically mean only $100 of the $240 (not counting current contract carry over) is actually guaranteed from the new $240 contract, not $231 million.

That makes it seem like if they relased him after 2025 that they would not owe him any more money and the dead cap hit would be something like $48 million ($16 million x 3 for the 2026-2028 remaining pro-rated signing bonus).

I hate when they use ambiguous terminology because "guaranteed" to me means it has to be paid, but the actual details make it look like the salaries for 2026-2028 do not become guaranteed until the 5th day of each of those league years.

If that is the case, then they are not guaranteed unless he is still on the team.

Four void years? That is going to hurt.
Nah. They did that to ease the pain. A big contract needs void years to absorb restructures. Ultimately, the idea is that you restructure a few times to bring down cap hits early in the contract, then when you are ready to draft his replacement, you are still paying for the departing QB but not paying much for the drafted QB. Dak will get his money, but when it is reflected on the cap is mostly dependent on what Dallas wants to do in free agency. Lots of space can be created off this one contract.
