The conversation around quarterbacks marches on for the Cowboys.
By Dan Rogers Apr 22, 2024

To extend or not to extend, that is the question. Are the Dallas Cowboys going to re-sign Dak Prescott, who is the face of this franchise, or has the front office decided that a new, more affordable face is preferred?

This dilemma has been the topic of many conversations as fans and media outlets repeatedly express how poorly the front office has handled this situation. At least that is what people believe now, but we don’t know how this story ends. Yesterday, we examined the worst-case scenarios for this ongoing quarterback fiasco, and today we’ll flip that frown upside down and see if we can manifest a happier ending.

SECOND BEST CASE - Re-sign Dak, trade Trey for draft capital

BEST CASE SCENARIO - Move on from Dak, Lance emerges as a rising star QB

I feel best case scenario Dak is released or accepts a trade and Trey emerges as a young more athletic star and we win some playoff games.

2nd best scenario Dak accepts an extension(and plays better in the playoffs) and Trey is a backup or showcases enough in preseason we can get a return on the investment by trading him.

3. Absolute worst case scenario. Neither Dak or Trey are here in 2025 and they both go play well for other teams.

As a Cowboys fan I want option 1 or 2 and I’m terrified option 3 will happen with Dumb and Dumber running the show.

The QB question isnt just about Dak and Trey Lance. Its not a choice between only 2 candidates. We can draft QBs and we can sign veteran QBs. Losing one or both is far from being the end of the world. You could see the Cowboys making a playoff run in 2025 with a QB room where none of the 3 x QBs are currently on the roster.

Trade Dak and start Trey...

It seems like the natural progression of things. But are the Joneses going to screw this up too?
Not trading Dak isnt on the Jones'. He got the NTC and if Dak didnt get it last time it's conceivable he would of hit the market then. Dak isnt going to accept any trade, why should he go to another team, learn a new Offense, in an inferior team.

Best case scenario, and i'm considered a Hater, is a long term Dak extension, which allows restructuring and an ability to go ALL-IN over the next couple of years.

Second option, build both lines (into powerhouses) and rely on a QB that we find in the 4th or even an UDFA and ease him into the NFL.

Dak can't force a contract extension. Once he understands the Cowboys are moving on from him, he will be more amicable to a trade that the Cowboys negotiate.

first scenario is a fantasy. it has a 0.00001% chance of happening.

is the second one, the 2nd best? not so sure. its second best for Jerry to continue to sell jersey's.

the 3rd might actually be the best. move on from both. suffer as a 4 win team for several years. draft a QB high, fail at it. continue to suffer and Joneses come to their senses and hire a real Coach/GM ala bill parcells. this team has been on the brink since Parcells where before him they couldn't find their way to the field. they have been somewhat competitive, but not enough to go far into the playoffs. its time for another coach/GM to come change the way this franchise operates.

Dak is not a option.
The win -win option is Trey works out.
2nd good option: Trey stinks, we trade Parsons and draft a QB in 2025 moving up if needed, we'll have the picks to take QB 1 or 2.

If we are going with Lance then trade dak now. We need as much draft capital as possible

I doubt it, he'll have veto on the location and we have to agreement on the compensation.

Nobody is interested in him. If they were, with all the turmoil surrounding his contract, teams would have reached out to see if they could work something out and get Dak to waive no trade clause. We would have heard about it.

Someone claimed a ton of teams would love to have dak. When i asked who, he threw me out of his office.

I am sure some would....even us....just not for the asking price.

Haven't you heard? Many around are saying Lance was a wasted trade, he wasn't worth a 4th with two years left on his contract. I guess the want to run the single wing offense, where we don't need a QB.

Yep, I suppose Jerry's decision is whether he can get the extension done or that $29m saving on Dak's salary.
.....which is probably the reason why both sides are waiting out the draft, to see who's the odd team out in the QB Draft Stakes and whether that team has any money/CAP to cover part of the lost $29m

Dak and the Cowboys aren’t forcing each other to do anything. It’s a negotiation, if it even comes to that. If the Cowboys intend to move on from Dak there will be no contract offer the compels Dak to sign. Dak’s alternative is become a free agent because that’s how he’ll get the most compensation. Both sides already understand what their respective situation is. Agreeing to a trade would require Dak acquiesce to negotiating with only one team. Why would he want to do that?

Play Trey Lance a lot in the preseason and evaluate him and decide if sitting Dak and playing Trey as a starter would be a viable alternative.
