This is obviously the hot topic around here and I figured I’d share my two cents on the subject. I think a lot of people have a good understanding of things but I think there are also some misconceptions out there.
I think the biggest misconception that is out there is that people think K. Moore is calling a different game with Dak than he does with Rush. People want to blame Moore when the reality is, it isn’t Moores fault. I’m by no means a Moore guy but to place blame on his shoulders isn’t correct.
Lets talk about the differences between Rush and Dak and how it leads people to blame Moore.
Dak is obviously a more talented player than Rush. He can make a ton of plays that Rush cannot make. Both with his arm and with his legs. The offense has a much higher ceiling with Dak. However, what is evident by the 7 games played between the two of them this season, is that with the more upside with Dak also comes more negative plays.
Rush gets rid of the ball much quicker than Dak. He knows where to deliver the ball and it’s out on time. Dak holds on to the ball longer and that is going to lead to much more negative plays. Plays such as sacks, offensive holding calls, and even false starts. Just more penalties in general. Also evident by the two very poor decisions by Dak yesterday , he’s also going to take and make more risky throws that aren’t good choices.
It’s not a coincidence that the team played 4/5 games without Dak and they played super clean, complementary football, and didn’t beat themselves. Then all of a sudden Dak comes in, the penalties are up, the turnovers were almost up, and the amount of negative plays in general were up.
Dak said it himself after the game. He knows he needs to be better. These aren’t things that are caused by a 5 week layoff, these are things that have hindered Dak for the better part of the last half of a season he has played.
This team is good. The defense is good special teams is good. The nfc is not good. But this team won’t accomplish what it’s capable of accomplishing unless Dak starts playing cleaner football. The way Dak plays emphasizes the weaknesses on this team. And that’s not good. When you hold on to the ball too long, it’s makes it much more likely that the rookie LT will get exposed or that the RT or any other weak link on the OL will get beat or have a penalty.
Dak needs to understand that he doesn’t need to play hero ball for this team to win. As a matter of fact, him playing hero ball makes everyone around him, including himself even worse. If Dak can find the happy medium, which he hasn’t been able to do just yet, between being very efficient and picking his spots to make big plays, this team can be very good. But if he’s unable to do that, this team won’t be able to continuously overcome the large amount of negative plays that he brings to the table. All in all, this team goes as Dak goes. This isn’t about Rush being better or Rush being the starter. There is no hope at winning with Rush at qb.
But Dak has to be much more steady than he’s shown lately for that to happen. Less negative plays is more for Dak. Forget more good plays. Cut down on the negative plays and this team will be much better. This is what we should have our eyes on w the qb moving forward.
