Dallas has reverted to a bad habit of old: Running on first down too much

This has been an issue really since 2014, and while it has improved overall since Moore took over at the playcaller in 2019 he does fall into this habit for stretches.

Over the last 5 games we’re running on first down at the third highest rate in the league. First down is the best down to throw on, virtually all QBs have their highest rating in third down. A statistically disproportionate number of big plays and TDs happen by throwing on first down. Defensive coordinators appreciate first down runs.

We need to get back to taking advantage of first down

Oh, FFS. Half this board cries if we run on first down, the other half cry when we pass. A lot of variables involved with play-calling; I'd like to trust the coaching staff on such matters, more than the punters here.

How many people whine about not leaving it in the hands of the qb? If you want to be a running team, then you're going to be running on first down a lot. That simple.

I think the Cowboys have to be able to run on 1st downs of they are less effective as an offense. Dak cannot be trusted to throw 45 times, especially when he is throwing 2 picks per game.

At the same time, I admit, sometimes you needs to mix things up and throw when they are expecting a run. But again, if you throw, you have to trust the QB is going to hit the receiver.
