DALLAS - When it comes to sports and business opportunities, Dallas tops the list.

A new report from the Sports Business Journal ranked Dallas and the surrounding area as the No. 1 spot in the country to conduct sports business.

Aside from the number of major sports venues in the area such AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, the American Airlines Center and Toyota Stadium, the report mentions the high number of sports companies that are headquartered in DFW.

For example, PGA of America recently moved its headquarters after building a $550 million development in Frisco.

Many corporate sponsors now call the Dallas area home and several major sports organizations have moved their big events to DFW such as the PBR’s World Finals and the ATP’s Dallas Open.

The Dallas area even has the country’s first pro cricket stadium, which is being built in Grand Prairie.

Full story below along with local TV coverage with comments from Dak and others local sport’s celebrities.

Ha! What's Kansas City bragging about?

They aren't even the #1 city for most 200-degree black asphalt square meage and glass coated high rise office buildings for 70 year old dudes to confuct"sports business" in.

WINNING !!!!!!
This recognition doesn’t really have anything to do with winning.

It’s more about why a diversity of sports and sports business is attractive to Dallas and surrounding area.

When are they getting another Super Bowl? I figured they would be in the mix or rotation to host one at least every 8-10 years. Need to get Captain America on it. He'll straighten them out.
They’re probably still reeling from the lawsuit and scandal from our last SB. Leave it to Jethro to screw that up. Good news is they are getting almost everything else . I attend more events at AT&T than Cowboy games which I haven’t since 2014 playoff game.

But they wouldn’t have been eligible to bid on another SB until 2023. It will likely happen again but because of their bundle the first time maybe not as often as they’d of hoped.

Just a follow up on this link is just two years ago we had another ice storm which was even worse and crippled the area and most of Texas without power to over 4 million residents for a week.

Jerry does so much more in sports then just own the Cowboys. Jerrys business got loans for the Raiders lv move and stadium as well as the funding for the LA stadium. He was the leading voice that got the Rams moved. The Jones family is probably the leading family involved with the salvation army. Only people who don't know and understand, will mock Jerry because he's the elite in terms of sports business. And put aside your hate on how he runs the Cowboys, nobody in their right mind would ever think he was not a gold mine in terms of sports business.

I hope they bring the US Open to the D/FW area, soon.
They are bringing the PGA Championship for sure which is in May now.

But US Open is of course in June on Fathers Day weekend and the heat could be brutal.

Understood but this recognition is much more than about the Cowboys.

The main reason we have surpassed NY is because of the PGA recent move to Frisco.

Sports business have also relocated to Dallas area because of our lean tax base.

Did you read entire story and watch news coverage. This wasn’t a Jethro bashing event.

Let’s hope we finally get legalized gambling on the ballot in November as some state lawmakers have introduced a bill and we’ll have major casinos and sports betting in Dallas area as well.

Dallas is already on pace to become the nations third largest metro area in the next decade only behind NY and LA. The mayor has already suggested the DFW area could support another NFL franchise.

Dallas has elite grassroots youth sports organizations.
Girls soccer ranks 2nd to the pac northwest
Girls volleyball ranks 1st
Girls softball ranks 1st.
FC Dallas has easily the best soccer academy.
Girls and Boys basketball both rank very high.
You have year-round position coaches for all football/baseball/soccer/basketball/volleyball/softball positions
The 2 best independent NFL position coaches are both located in Dallas.
--WR coach DROB and OL Coach Big Duke.

Then on collegiate scene DFW is home to a massive alumni base for UT/TAMU/OU/TTU/BAY/TCU/OSU/KST and others.
There is a sports bar seemingly on every corner.
It is a common locale for graduates because of strong job markets.

Cities and counties look to attract sports orgs as it is an important part of life and identity here.
They give land away free and do not tax it.

Then yes you have the most popular football team in the world here.

It also features a world class international airport and a 2nd highly rated regional airport.

In Texas, Dallas is the money city. It is a hub of transplants that move in for good paying jobs with disposable incomes that often go toward sports in some fashion.

Frisco, Texas was essentially built by Jerry and it is constantly ranked a top 5 city in the country for happiness, low crime, education, overall growth and other marks.

DFW def has some downsides like traffic and 800 toll roads but nothing that would ding it on a sports business ranking.

AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field aren't even in Dallas County
You glossed over the second statement in 'Diehardblues' OP comment -- "...ranked Dallas and THE SURROUNDING AREA as the No.1 spot...."

And here is a statement from that 'Sports Business Journal' article:

'The market's sports business footprint, which includes Arlington, Ft. Worth, Frisco, and other U.S. Census-designated surburbs, is growing day by day.'

The vast DFW "Metroplex" is taken into account regarding sports business entities and opportunites existing in that area
Not just Dallas County -- but also Tarrant, Denton, Collins, Rockwell, Kaufman, Ellis, Johnson, and Parker Counties.

  1. Dallas
  2. New York
  3. Charlotte
  4. Minneapolis
  5. Atlanta
  6. Los Angeles
  7. Las Vegas
  8. Nashville
  9. Chicago
  10. Phoenix
I have traveled to most of these cities on business. I worked in NY for 30 years. NY has to be burning that they came in 2nd to Dallas.

I always liked Dallas when I traveled there. We got to stay in the 4 Seasons resort so that was nice. But plenty of restaurants and bars. Many companies have already located there and real estate and taxes are far more reasonable that many other places.

New York sucks. Sorry, but the city is uninviting, taxes are ridiculous, crime is increasing, they have lots of public transit but it is all filthy and smelly. They have sports history, but the Jets and Giants play in NJ, not New York. Call it a suburb or metropolitan area, whatever, but it is still NJ.

Charlotte is a really nice place. I was there recently. It is getting crowded down there. It used to be better.

Minneapolis is a nice city, but it is too cold for me in the winter. Anyplace where they have engine block heaters in the parking garages is in hospitable in my book.

Atlanta, like Charlotte used to be really nice. It still is a great place, but the crime is increasing there and it is getting over crowded.

Los Angeles is just a big fat no. The weather is beautiful, and you can play gold all year round, but that is all you can say. It is an ugly place that is too expensive to live in. My son and his family live there and I don't mind the visit but I prefer places where the roads are not parking lots and the housing does not cost an arm and a leg, literally.

I love Vegas, but as a giant playground.

Nashville is the only city where I have not been.

I have been to Chicago a few times on business. It's okay I guess. I don't recall anything memorable about it though.

Phoenix is a great place. In the summer you can have a cookout on the hood of your car! Just kidding, but the summers can get hot and dry. I once considered relocating there but housing prices have gone way up there and it is no longer a cheaper alternative to Northern NJ.

  1. Dallas
  2. New York --- I really like NYC but sports are a much smaller part of life there than in Texas.
  3. Charlotte --- Growing gem to be sure. But just well behind Dallas in everything.
  4. Minneapolis --- just too cold to do much but hockey or ice fishing 3-4 months of the year.
  5. Atlanta --- Similar to Dallas. A southern hub with solid weather and massive population center where people congregate in a sports crazy area. Sprawl is handled far better in Dallas however.
  6. Los Angeles --- People here just do not care about sports. Plenty of talent and weather and money.
  7. Las Vegas --- Jewel in the desert. Growing as a sports option but not the best for families and grassroots stuff. Elite as a tourney destination.
  8. Nashville --- Trendy, Austin north locale. Every southern frat boy and sorority girls dream. Only have energy for a few sports.
  9. Chicago --- Handles sprawl similar to Dallas and has monied suburban parents who fund sports and spent on entertainment. Hub of the MidWest. Expensive for orgs to be there.
  10. Phoenix --- Just so hot. Unlike Vegas its more retirement than short term stays. So skews older and less fun. Boomer friendly but the college kids are often gonna move to Southern Cali.
