No kidding. And a TV show starting next month!
I've been waiting for 4-5 years. I've forgotten a lot of the storyline. I guess I'll have to reread it, even though I've read the first two about three times.

What is it, another 3.5 hour Kevin Costner movie?

LOL, no it's the next book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R. R. Martin. It has taken him a very long time to make this book.

I don't know if I even care. If it takes 5 years to release this book, how many years to release the next (last) two. It's clear that it's not his main focus or interest any more, and with his health issues, I wonder if the story would get finished. If he'd have released this within 2 or 3 years of when I finished Feast I would have bought it in hardback, but as it is I think I'll hold out for a year or two to see if he's going to continue the series. And it will be easy to do that since I'll probably have to re-read the series anyway to remember everything.

It's going to be a huge hit for HBO. I'm sure he'll keep the milktrain runnin'.

It's funny that everybody acts like the wait for A Dance with Dragons was unprecedented. It took him 5 years between A Storm of Swords and a Feast for Crows too. He writes other science fiction and does a lot of stuff other than just this series, so it's not his only focus. I mean, I love the series and I want him to finish it too, but it's his right to write it at whatever pace he wants.

The reason why it is unprecedented for me is because I finished A Storm of Swords about 3 months before a Feast for Crows came out as I had just heard about the series from my brother a few months earlier. So it's the first wait like this for me.

What was the wait like between the first 3 books?

Hopefully he has the last 2 more planned out in his head so he doesn't get stuck for so long like he did on Dragons.

I believe part of the reason for the wait on this one was because he had the idea for the last one and wrote quite a bit of it then decided it was too big to fit in one book so he basically started over and made it into two books. I think that is what I read somewhere. That is why some of the best storylines were omitted from the last book; Tyrion, Jon Snow... That was what really irritated me. The entire last book didn't contain some of my favorite storylines. But ya, he does take a while to write a book but I believe Stephen King wrote the first two or three books of the gunslinger then it was like 30 years before he continued it.

There were only 2 years between books 1 and 2, and 2 and 3. That being said, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were originally supposed to be one book. It got too large and he had to split it up, which is probably part of what made each one take so long to write. Also, the series is just not the only thing he does.

He released 2 novels, a short story collection, and a children's book in the years between Feast for Crows and now. People mostly know him for ASoIaF and want to demand it's the only thing he does. He jokes about it on his website.

The funny thing is, he said A Dance with Dragons is about as big as A Storm of Swords, so even though it's just the characters that weren't in Feast, it's going to be a huge book.
