DC.COM Blog: Confidence Seems High; Phillips Pleased/Ken Hamlin Likely Out For Sunday

I totally understand that one has to ignore the facts to claim that Hamlin is a liability.

Free safeties don't play man coverage. I'm not sure why you would want your free safety playing man coverage. That is terrible football.

Well, considering there has only been a couple safeties over the past three years give up fewer passes and fewer TDs per play than Hamlin, I'd say "terrific" is pretty accurate.

that's scheme, buddy

it's easy to not give up yards and TDs when you're hardly around the football

What is Hamlin doing scheme wise that other free safeties aren't?

what's so funny? his only responsibility is covering the deep secondary

everyone else at one time or another has a receiver that they have to cover except for Hamlin

what's laughable is the idea of rating Hamlin using coverage metrics, when he doesn't cover anyone

what's funny is that we get a safety who can actually cover

Jenkins grows up

Newman is being Newman

and the secondary magically quits sucking from the beginning of the year

You're exactly right, Hamlin is just running around not covering anyone whatsoever.

:laugh2:

We stopped giving up the deep ball before Jenkins was even drafted. That was the bane of this defense for years. And it "magically" stopped when Hamlin showed up.

Its not as prevelent as it used to be, but we've still given up plenty of big plays, and alot of them are because either Hamlin doesnt get there for the help or because he blows the tackle in the open field. He single handedly lost the Ravens game and gave up the game winning td vs Denver because of horrendous tackling.

Trying to argue that a FS who has no coverage responsibilities is a good player when the guy never makes a significant play is mind boggling IMO. The guy should be getting his hands on the football and he doesnt. I can forgive dropping a potential int or getting a 15 yd penalty for a big hit, but he doesnt do anything. Its almost like we play defense with 10 guys when he's out there.

Name them. Give me 5 big plays that Hamlin has given up this year.
