Door Now Opens For Jason Williams
Posted by nickeatman at 5/10/2010 3:25 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

While it’s easy to think the Cowboys have traded Bobby Carpenter to make room for the newly-drafted Sean Lee, let’s not completely forget about Jason Williams.

Last year’s third-round pick – the first selection by the Cowboys in 2009 – basically spent last season as a redshirt, playing in just five games and mostly on special teams.

When you think about the role Carpenter played last year as a dime backer on third downs, covering a lot of tight ends, you would think Williams has a chance to at least compete with Lee for that spot. One knock on Lee’s game is pass coverage, therefore Williams could have the slight edge in that category.

But while both players are considered high draft picks, there are expectations for Lee, whom the Cowboys admit they had rated in the first-round.

Then again, Jerry Jones sounded very adamant before the draft about making sure some of the middle-round draft picks get more playing time in the future. That would certainly bode well for Williams.

So it will be interesting to see how it all plays out once OTAs begin next week and the mini-camp in June.

One knock on Lee’s game is pass coverage,

I brought this up after the draft and people in here were adament Lee could cover. Last year way too many 3rd and longs got converted. Dont want to see that happening again.

I've heard Lee can cover and he even played some corner in highschool.

If lee can't cover tuan there is a high chance he will bust.

Lee appears to be an all-around LB who while he wont excel in pass coverage, he shouldnt hurt you either.

Williams because of his unusual speed, the hope is he can excel in a nickel/dime role.

Lee said he was a safety in high school, so he at least knows some technique and has some experience. And Wade was impressed with his movement skills at the minicamp, so I'd assume he can cover as well as most LBs his size.

IIRC Lee had 8 pbu's and 2 int's and 3 ff's his JR year before his knee injury. The PSU coaches rave about his coverage and recognition skills. He can cover and cover well!

Jerry said Lee was a 3 down LB.

I think Lee can be a nickel backer. The question is actually whom will be better nickel LB. I think Williams has a shot equal to that of Lee. He's faster. It will come down to who has the best instincts.

I hope we split time between all 4 ILB's. Gives the older folk some rest and the newer folk some experience. Sort of like how we play our defensive ends.

I think James and Brooking were pretty meh in pass coverage last year.

Jason Williams>Sean Lee

Maybe so. He has great talent, no doubt about it. Last year on some show on 103.3, Bradie had J-Will, Butler, and Hodge with him, and he gave a couple nice words about Butler and Hodge, but really lit up when he talked about Jason's tremendous athletic ability.

If nothing else, I remember reading about how T-New was doing standing backflips at practice, so Jason showed everyone he could do one, too... At 240 lbs.

Now he just needs to get used to playing in all directions and know his playbook cold.

Vela interviewed Anthony Spencer, and Spencer said that Jason Williams looks really good.

Williams VS Lee

Now, that is going to be a fun competition.

I suspect both players will be knocking on the door.

I hope they get to play some.

I was just reading that, and like so many other comments on the blog said, Anthony had to have gotten confused and was thinking of B-Will. Sure looks like he got his Williams confused. (Who can blame him, we have about 20 of them.)

But yeah, Jason's progress is going to be really interesting to see. Can he really be an all-around LB and not just a gap-shooting rusher? We'll see. This is one reason I'm glad we got that extra preseason game. These young guys need every snap they can get.

I went through there fast. Good catch. Indeed.

Oh, well. If he was talking about Brandon Williams, that is good, too.

I would love to get Ware, Spencer, Brandon Williams, Victor Butler, and Jason Williams all on the field at the same time.

Then, I want to see the look on Tom Coughlin's face when Eli is on his back.

Jason Williams is a speed merchant and I like him a lot, but his forte is not pass coverage either. He is used to attacking the ball, moving forwards not backwards.

That said, Lee is the more instinctive of the two. Williams could become the bigger playmaker though. Lee is a very willing hitter and technically sound tackler(ie Brooking) but JWill brings the heat when he hits. The guy is just good at seperating the ball from ballcarriers (Curtis Johnson plays the same way).
