INDIANAPOLIS - The Cowboys are no strangers to national headlines, especially at the NFL Scouting Combine in a year they own a Top 10 pick in the upcoming draft.
Certainly, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton generates attention as well.
So it shouldn't be a big surprise that Newton and the Cowboys have been somewhat linked together here in the early days of the combine. Basically, it has stemmed from the simple fact the Cowboys will indeed interview Newton. The club will meet individually with roughly 50 to 60 players while in Indianapolis, and Newton is scheduled to be one of them.
Regardless of draft needs, it's not unusual for teams, especially one with a pick as high as the Cowboys, to at least visit with all of the top players.
When asked specifically about Newton, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones took an overall approach.
"I wouldn't dismiss any player that's going to be in that draft and wouldn't express interest," Jones said. "So much happens with the circumstances that are there, not only on draft day but how we continue our process."
But Jones did add that quarterback is one of the few positions that doesn't need immediate help.
"But I do feel like we're in really top shape. . . I'm going to really say outstanding shape at the position," Jones said. "Obviously, a quarterback to draft right now is a future consideration. For that reason, I wouldn't dismiss him or any position."
Newton, the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner who led Auburn to a national championship, is considered a Top 10 pick, but his workout here at the combine could jump into the top two or three selections.
By saying that drafting a quarterback would be for future consideration, Jones doesn't imply he would take one in the first round. Earlier in his visit with reporters, the owner talked about having two of the top 40 picks with No. 9 and No. 40 in the April draft.
"With these early picks, these guys have got to be guys that are on the field for us and contributors," Jones said. It sounds like interviewing Newton is part of the process of the combine and it's way too early to dismiss any player, especially for competitive reasons. But reading between the lines, it sounds like drafting a quarterback at No. 9 wouldn't be atop the Cowboys' list of priorities.
