Pro Bowl FS Antrel Rolle Could Be Available
Posted by jellis at 2/23/2010 5:40 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

If the Cowboys decide to address their free safety position this off-season, one scenario they could explore would be the possibility of acquiring Arizona's Antrel Rolle.

Due a $4 million roster bonus next week, at least one operative of team site AZCardinals.com believes Rolle will be released.

If Rolle hits the open market, the Cowboys might have interest. Coming off his first career Pro Bowl in 2009, the former No. 8 overall pick transitioned from corner to free safety in 2008. In his first year at the position he had one interception and six passes defended, along with 119 tackles, second-most on the team. In 2009 he had four picks, 10 pass defenses, 1.5 sacks and 90 tackles, again second on the Cardinals.

Rolle, who is scheduled for a 2010 base salary of just over $8 million, would likely come at a higher price than even Ken Hamlin. The Cowboys free safety is two seasons into a six-year, $39 million deal, with just over $1 million of his $5.6 million base salary guaranteed for the coming season.

After making the Pro Bowl in 2007, his first year with the Cowboys, Hamlin has one interception, seven passes defended and 1.5 sacks over the last two years. Hamlin also played strong safety earlier in his career, a position where the Cowboys could have a need, but Wade Phillips has said he sees free safety as Hamlin's more natural spot.

Signing the potential free agent Rolle would likely count as the Cowboys' lone big-money signing under the Final 8 Rule of an uncapped season.

Ankle injury shortened 2009 season by Ken Hamlin
Rob Phillips

Name: Ken Hamlin
Position: Safety
Height/Weight: 6-2, 209
Experience: Seven seasons
College: Arkansas

Key stat: Hamlin did not record an interception for only the second time in seven seasons, the other being in 2005 with the Seahawks when he missed 10 games with a serious head injury.

Contract Status: Signed through 2013.

2009 Impact: Hamlin returned as the starting free safety in his second season (third overall in Dallas) of a six-year, $39 million contract. He made 12 starts, missing four games in November and December with a high ankle sprain. Cornerback/safety Alan Ball played solidly in his absence. Due in part to the injury, Hamlin's team-credited 74 tackles were the lowest of his career and his three pass breakups were the second lowest (excluding that shortened '05 season).

Where He Fits: Assuming he's back for 2010, Hamlin would likely settle into the starting lineup again. Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh is a restricted free agent under the imminent uncapped rules, but he played well in his first season with the team and the Cowboys appear committed to keeping him. There has been public speculation Hamlin might be let go this off-season, but he does have a small portion of his 2010 salary guaranteed and head coach Wade Phillips has often praised his communication - recognizing formations and such - in the secondary. Owner/general manager Jerry Jones said in the middle of the season that the team needed more big plays from the safety position, though. Behind the starters, second-year veteran Mike Hamlin is a prospect the Cowboys like. Pat Watkins, a special teams standout, is a restricted free agent.

Writers' Analysis:

Rob Phillips: The Cowboys didn't allow many deep completions in 2009, and the defensive coaches do value Hamlin's savvy back there. For instance, Mike Jenkins credited one of his interceptions to Hamlin predicting a route before the snap. That said, no interceptions and three pass breakups (albeit in 12 games) were a decrease compared to Hamlin's Pro Bowl season in 2007 (five interceptions, 14 pass breakups). More takeaways and big plays from Hamlin will make the Cowboys' defense even better.

Josh Ellis: We've all heard how important Hamlin is to the Cowboys secondary because of his communication skills, and Wade Phillips has even said he can often identify what plays opposing offenses are going to run. If that's really the case I would expect him to be around the ball more. The pass defense was noticeably better when Hamlin returned from his high ankle sprain late in the season, but a lot of that had to do with him helping take away the home-run ball from teams who really like to throw it, New Orleans and Philadelphia. As good as he is in deep coverage, he hasn't shown much ability to come up and make plays on the ball, with just one interception and seven passes defended the last two seasons. Either he needs to improve, or the Cowboys do

Man, the Arizona run D must have really sucked for a safety to be racking up 100+ tackles in a season.

Uhhh, no, it wouldn't... if Rolle was RELEASED by the Cards, the Boys can sign him, and as many like him, as they care to... he wouldn't be covered by the Final 8 rule...

jellis needs to get his facts straight...

Have them duel it out...maybe one can try the strong spot. He did have a million tackles in Arizona and seems to get high marks for his run support...then again, it isn't Madden and just finished learning a new position.

How much of an improvement would we get and how much would he cost?
He is a gambler and gives up plays. So DOES he make ENOUGH to make up for what he gives up?

That would totally kill "Ken Hamlin Bobblehead" day for next season.
