Linval Joseph and Jordan Phillips may be old and definitely on the downside of their careers, but it's definitely refreshing to have some legit beef with career proven production on the inside of our D-line to help stop the run this year. Hope they stay healthy and are able to contribute on a rotational role all season long.

You said it all in the first breath: they're old and on the downside! Is that the kind of addressing the position fans deserve?

I hope some of these guys can stop us from getting "gashed" up the middle by opposing teams. I'm really kind of tired of that. Would be nice to have that issue fixed.

Beggars can't be choosers at this moment in time. We need any help (even if limited) we can get inside our D-line with Mazi, Osa and other DTs struggling to stop the run in recent years.

Certainly you're not referring to the fans as beggars

It is not just about size. There are plenty of big fat guys out there. The question is, can they move? Are the strong? Are the football smart? People forget that the most disruptive DT in football the last few years was Aaron Donald and he is small by some standards.

I am not going to over-estimate the ability of Phillips and Joseph at this point in their careers. I Joseph has 5 quality plays per game in him, I would be pleasantly surprised. To me, the DL success starts and ends with Mazi Smith.

It’s the 1T we can’t seem to find. I’d say OSA is fine. It’s the play of the 1T we need and those guys are typically about size.

Just saying.... Vince wilfork at the end of his career made plays just by being a big boy that doesn't move.

It's simple math, the heavier you are the harder it is to move.

Can someone be so strong that they can get away with being lighter and still be hard to move? Absolutely. But those guys are hard to find, what's easy to find is a big boy who knows how to stick his feet in the ground and clog up the middle of the line leaving RBs no room to maneuver and no space for the QB to step up.

Having quick twitch DTs who knife into the backfield is great when they can do it, but when they can't they end up pancaked by the center while the G gets to the next level and the RB is just gliding through an open hole with a lead blocker.

You do realize we also have Phillips so they'll break down this stuff between those 3 along with OSA that sounds like a very nice rotation in the center it's gotta be improved from last year don't wear down the big uglies spread it around...

I'm not sure about that but we'll see we'll see who's the starter and who gets more snaps and I think the hot hand will stay in longer but there are plenty now you add in OSA so you have 4 guys in there rotating switching unless they wanna go with a NASCAR package like it's been discussed like big fatties like this are not on the field that that much most of them are truly gonna be on the field in run heavy sets where they're expecting to run short yardage goal line maybe first downs where they see the run from a team that runs a lot yeah but none of these guys are gonna play 60 snaps anyway even if they were 25 again....

I fully expected us to just stick with what we had, even though it wasn't working. And I know some fans wanted us to keep Rogers over signing the old guys. But at least they saw a problem and threw something new (old) at it. It probably won't work out any better than our past aging vet signings or most other cheap signings we've made, but who knows. We are only asking them for rotational snaps, so maybe they can handle it.

I think the team hopes that as well. I won't be surprised tomorrow if we start off using Mazi at 1-tech on first down alongside Phillips as the 3-tech. Then, depending on how that goes, it will be Mazi and Odighizuwa on second down, and Osa and Lawrence/Kneeland on third downs (with Parsons and Lawson at end). Joseph's role will depend on Mazi. He'll either rotate in to take some of those first-down snaps or he'll be the 1-tech on first downs if we fail to stop the run with either Mazi or Phillips as the 3-tech on first down.

Its been done before on a lot of teams. You hardly ever get effecting defensive tackles in their youth. They put on about 40 lbs and all of a sudden they are anchors. Pat Williams with the Buffalo Bills of old is a good example.

I expect Joseph on short yardage situations mostly, especially since he had no camp. What kind of shape is he in? I think they named Osa the starter so if they stick be that it will Be Osa and Mazi on the first defensive snap. I think Joseph will see more playing time each week as he gets in shape.

Maybe if we sign one more player we can obtain the more heaviest defensive line in football.
