We're just a couple weeks away from the January 15 deadline for underclassmen to declare their intentions to enter the 2005 NFL Draft and About Football has the buzz on several of the top draft prospects.
• The Virginia Cavaliers should feel better about their immediate future with three of their top four underclassmen prospects looking like they will indeed return for their senior seasons.
Offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, who likely would be the first offensive lineman off the board in April, has stated that he will be back at Virginia to finish out his college career. Linebackers Darryl Blackstock and Ahmad Brooks, who were previously believed to be leaning toward the pros, now appear ready to join Ferguson in returning to school.
At this time, it appears tight end Heath Miller may be the only underclassmen the Cavaliers lose. He has yet to make a commitment either way, but it is widely believed he will forego his senior season. If he does choose to enter the draft, he will most likely be the first tight end selected.
• Oklahoma State junior running back Vernand Morency has stated publicly that he will not be entering the 2005 NFL draft, and instead, will return to school for his senior season so he can keep a promise to his mother by graduating.
• Utah quarterback Alex Smith indicated at a press conference Monday that he has received unofficial feedback from several NFL teams, advising him on his draft potential, but he will wait until after the bowl game to announce a decision. With head coach Urban Meyer leaving the program, and the prospects of having to learn a new system, I'd be surprised if he doesn't decide to make the jump to the next level.
Sophomore wide receiver Steve Savoy has also displayed an interest in the NFL, but has said he plans to wait and see what Smith decides to do. Savoy, who spent a semester at a prep school in Connecticut after high school, is eligible to enter the draft this year because he has been out of high school for three years.
• DeAngelo Williams, who suffered a broken leg in the GMAC Bowl, has not ruled out entering the 2005 draft, and in fact, appears to be leaning toward leaving school.
• Amid uncertainty regarding the future of the Temple football program, junior linebacker Rian "Goo" Wallace has indicated that he will forgo his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the 2005 NFL draft. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Wallace was a first-team all-Big East Conference selection this season.
