Cover 1, Cover 3, Cover your eyes: Cowboys defensive flip hasn't worked

https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/2024/10/24/mike-zimmer-cowboys-scheme-odd-wrinkle/

Most will agree, the Cowboys’ biggest shake up of the 2024 offseason was their change at defensive coordinator. Gone was Dan Quinn. After coaching the Dallas defense for three successful seasons, Quinn earned a head coaching job in our nation’s capital. Replacing him at the helm was long time coordinator Mike Zimmer. Zimmer brought with him his infamously demanding defensive scheme, a nonsense attitude and an acceptance for timely split safety looks.

While the Cowboys were still expected to lean on man coverage in 2024, they were also expected to show more two-high safety looks. Zimmer was known to disguise coverage frequently and split his safeties over the top from time to time. It was a departure from his predecessor who both preferred single high safety formations and didn’t put much value is disguises.

2024 has proven to be surprising but not quite in the way many imagined. Zimmer has indeed disguised coverages, rolling safeties and linebackers at the last second to catch passers off guard, but he hasn’t moved Dallas off the single-high safety reliance.

Outside of Harris, the Cowboys need a new DC and defensive staff next year. Not impressed with any of them.

That being said, injuries have wrecked havoc on that side of the ball. No question about it.

This has been as bad as the Nolin hire so far.
The only thing we can give him a pass on is he had one offseason to try to completely flip from one person's scheme to his and not give it a whole lot of good players to do so and then have a Max unit of players out so yes it just it feels like that which I don't know what that chart tells you it tells you how often they use different schemes testing but I don't know what the thing about you know the different method percentage thing is on the far right corner I mean I don't get it what are they ranking that on but yeah we don't need charts and analytics to say the defense has been really bad in losses and I mean really bad...

But I do find it a little ironic that you guys just skip right over the fact that Dan Quinn's defense look like that in the Green Bay lost in the playoffs Dan Quinn's defense look like that and almost all our losses last year they were feaster famine I mean they either showed up or they got their butts kicked I don't see any difference I mean this was a little easier for Dan Quinn 'cause he was here for three seasons he got his players to run his scheme and Zimmer didn't have a whole lot of time to purge the roster and get the right players and then with Mr. budget minded free agent person you know free agency was very thin i....o get the players to play his defense..

No excuses though but man you guys give Dan Quinn a pass for what do you remember those losses the year before on the road kinda spread the narrative the Cowboys can't win on the road but we were up by 17 and 14 points against Green Bay and Jacksonville and somehow lost those games in overtime when you have those leads in the fourth quarter there's no defensive corner in this league you get a pass for blowing leaves like that is it a perfect charge I don't know but he's done that so often I don't know how Quinn gets like skipped over and you go right back to Nolan Dan Quinn's defenses looked better because he had his players playing hero ball trying to get those turnovers and I get it at times it looked great like it does right now for Washington but look at the two games they lost and look at the games they won they're beating up on bad teams and they're losing to the better teams sound familiar?

So let's just say it this way instead of just picking out one of our bad defensive coordinators let's just say the last decade sure looks the same on defense they're absolutely inconsistent and never dominant in a way that we could have a good balance or like coaches say complimentary football is hardly ever there with our teams...

The running backs aren't near productive in this first third of the season...isn't working optimum also. I have to watch and wait that out also.

As a former DB, I know there's only so many coverages you can run so it comes down to execution. From looking at the chart Cover 1 and Cover 3 are the main coverages of the NFL. I would guess if you have the talent to run man coverage you'll have a advantage.

Once Bland gets back and the CBs are as healthy as can be Zim needs to blitz heavy and pray Diggs, Bland and Lewis hold up. The zone coverage isn't going to work with a poor pass rush.

Right. We talk about the Dline, but Diggs is still ailing, and the opposite corner all season is a JAG. Throw in Hooker playing like crap, and Dono playing up and down. Time to try out Thomas IMO.

I've been advocating for that since last year. It's crazy he isn't getting more snaps.
I was at the game against NO and I believe it was Thomas on the field when Shaheed had that 70 yard bomb. We haven’t seen him since…..
