1st #27 D. McCourty CB Rutgers
He is a great return man who can seriously impact our average starting field position while we groom him as Newman’s replacement.
2nd #59 L. Houston DL Texas
I love this guy’s potential as a 3-4 DE. He’s big, fast, and provides quality depth at all three positions.
3rd #90 M. Lewis S Vanderbilt
Good size, speed, and coverage skills. Could he be a poor man’s Earl Thomas?
4th #125 M. Newhouse OL TCU
Mean, physical, and athletic. Could be an excellent starting guard and valuable swingman.
6th #196 R. Muckelroy ILB Texas
Very productive LB on a great defense. This guy has good speed, and instincts. It might take a season or two for him to start, but he is a great tackler and a hard hitter.
7th #234 R. Harewood OL Morehouse
Huge, athletic and very talented. He is very raw, but has fantastic long-term potential.
I am ASSUMING that Jerry and Wade think:
1. Mike Hamlin will give us even slightly better production at safety than Ken Hamlin.
2. Free can adequately replace Adams at LT.
3. One or two of Spears/Bowen/Hatcher/Olshansky will not be resigned for 2011 and there is a big market for 3-4 DE’s.
4. Our current OL depth will not be providing a replacement for Colombo/Kosier anytime soon.
5. You can never have too much talent at CB, and Newman is getting up in years.
6. 3-4 teams should take at least one LB in every draft.
The only first year starter in the bunch is McCourty, and only as a PR/KR. That is enough for now. Wade gets some explosive playmakers on defense who will see the field and impact games as rookies. Garrett gets depth on the Line as we add two large, versatile, and very talented guys for Houck to mold into our starting LG and RT for 2011. Of course I would love for Iupati or Bryant to drop to us, but I did this one assuming they were going to be long gone when we pick.
